Sophomore Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) continued her stellar play this season as the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team posted 10 goals in the second half to pick up a 15-11 victory over Temple University Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

McCartney netted a career-high six goals in the Blue Hens’ win. The midfielder added six controlled draws as Delaware returned to the field following an 11-day hiatus. The hat trick was the 12th of McCartney’s fledgling career.

The last time a Blue Hen posted at least six goals in a single game came on April 5, 2009 when Stephanie Allen put up six against William & Mary at Rullo Stadium. The feat has never been accomplished for the Hens or an opponent at Delaware Stadium for women’s lacrosse.

The last time a UD player collected more than six goals was April 2, 2000 as Sarah Edwards tallied seven goals against Penn State.

Delaware registered 10 goals in the second half of action as the Blue Hens have now scored at least nine goals in three of the last four halves played.

Seven of McCartney’s teammates also got in on the scoring as junior Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) collected her fourth hat trick of the season and second straight with three goals. Freshman Lauren VanDaniker picked up her first career goal and finished with two in the game. Junior Abbie Hartman (North Penn) and freshmen McKenzie Rafferty (Downingtowmn East) , Shannon Hawley and Kara Dattellas each added a goal for UD.

Sophomore Allison Hahn picked up a team-best two assists while Fay, Hartman, and VanDaniker each added one assist.

With the win, Delaware improves to 6-3 overall before beginning Colonial Athletic Association play this coming Sunday at home against Towson.

This marks the best start for the Blue Hens since 2008 when the team began 6-2 and finished the season with an 11-6 record. Delaware opened the 2000 campaign with a record of 8-0 before finishing the season 13-5 and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior Angela Biciocchi grabbed a game-high four groundballs during the team’s senior game. During halftime, the Blue Hens honored their lone senior for her four years of service to the University. Biciocchi added two draw controls and caused one turnover for UD.

Temple’s Stephany Parcell (Temple) tallied four goals for the Owls (5-4) in addition to a game-high three assists.

Delaware picked up a 15-12 advantage in the game in groundballs and bested Temple by a tune of 16-11 in draw controls. The Blue Hens also posted a clears mark of .875 by registering 14 clears on the day to just seven for the Owls.

Sophomore Alex Zaugra (Shawnee) earned her sixth win of the season by collecting seven saves in 60 minutes of play.

Temple threw three goalies between the pipes with Meghan Clothier starting the game for the Owls. Clothier ended with five saves and 10 goals allowed in the loss.
