Women’s D1 roundup: Lehigh, Princeton win, Lafayette falls

Sophomore Carli Sukonik (Harriton) scored six goals and senior Julie McBrien added five to help lead the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team to a 14-8 win over Bucknell on Saturday.
The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Mountain Hawks and gives them their first Patriot League victory of the season. Junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick added 12 saves in a strong effort between the pipes.

Freshman Nicole Isdaner and Kendall Garden, along with sophomore Chelsea Retaleato, added Lehigh’s other goals while freshman Megan Paytas tallied three assists. Isdaner and sophomore Kelsey Yenco tied for the team lead with three draw controls apiece.

Bucknell was led by Emily Kookogey who had two goals. The Bison’s leading scorer Katelyn Miller was held to only one goal by McBrien, who excelled at both ends of the field.

The Bison got the scoring started, but Lehigh answered in a big way as Sukonik scored three times and McBrien twice within a 8:29 span as Sukonik’s third made it 5-1 at 17:33 of the first half. The Bison answered with the next three to pull within one, but McBrien answered with her third of the game at 2:40 of the first for a 7-5 halftime lead.

The teams traded goals through the first five minutes of the second then with Lehigh leading 9-7, the Mountain Hawks went on a 5-0 run. Sukonik added three more in that span, capping it off with 1:02 remaining to make it 14-7. Bucknell scored 24 seconds later, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Final shots were 24-23 in favor of Bucknell while Lehigh held a 15-11 edge in groundballs and draw controls were tied at 12. Fitzpatrick’s 12 saves came across Caroline O’Neill, who made six.

Princeton 10, Johns Hopkins 7

Seven different players scored for the Tigers (4-3) in the win over the No. 12 Blue Jays as senior Jaci Gassaway led the charge with a hat trick. Sophomore Erin McMunn and junior Mary-Kate Sivilli both had three-point games with a goal and two assists each. Freshman Alexandra Bruno scored twice and junior Sarah Lloyd had a goal and an assist.

Defender Sammi Arbitman (Episcopal Academy) had a groundball and a caused turnover for Hopkins.

Navy 15, Lafayette 8
Kathy Young (Villa Maria academy) had four goals and an assist, Aimee Gennaro (Archbishop carroll0 had three goals, Lindsay Rheiner (Council Rock North) had a goal and four draw controls and Beth Young (Villa Maria Academy) scored once for the No. 18 Mids (10-1, 3-0) in the Patriot League win.
Ana White (Strath Haven) had five goals for Lafayette (6-5, 0-2).
