The Philadelphia Wings (3-3) got standout goaltending from Brandon Miller (39 saves) and overcame a slow start for a 10-8 comeback road win over the Rochester Knighthawks (3-5) at The Blue Cross Arena tonight.

The win snaps a 10-game losing streak to the Knighthawks dating back to 2009. It also snapped the Wings’ three-game losing streak.

Rochester forward Cody Jamieson opened the scoring 5:53 into the game as the Knighthawks scored four goals in less than three minutes for a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Wings were held scoreless for over 19 minutes to start the game until transition player Jordan Hall, making his first return to Rochester since being traded to Philadelphia in the offseason, got the Wings started at the 4:12 mark of the second quarter. Philadelphia’s captain Brodie Merrill scored a shorthanded breakaway goal to complete a four-goal scoring run in under five minutes to tie the game at 4-4.

Rochester stopped the run by scoring twice before half for a 6-4 lead at the break, led by Knighthawks forward Casey Powell’s two first-half goals. But the Wings again responded, this time with four third-quarter goals, two by forward Kevin Buchanan, for an 8-6 lead after 45 minutes of play.

The back-and-forth game was again tied, this time at 8-8, after the Knighthawks scored twice in the first 3:40 of the fourth quarter, including a highlight-reel backhand goal from Powell. But forward Drew Westervelt regained the lead for the Wings less than two minutes later.

The Knighthawks had a good scoring chance with a little under a minute to play but Miller made the save. After a Philadelphia timeout and save by Knighthawks netminder Matt Vinc, Miller made another stop with 20 seconds left with the entire crowd on their feet. The Wings played “keep-away” until Merrill scored on an empty net with less than one second left.

Wings forward Kevin Crowley had a game-high five points (3g, 2a), Westervelt (2g, 2a) and Buchanan (2g, 2a) both finished with four points, while Merrill finished with three points (2g, 1a) and a game-high 14 loose balls.

The Wings return home to Wells Fargo Center Sunday to take on the Colorado Mammoth at 4p.m. in the team’s second annual “Bark in the Bowl” game. Fans are invited to bring their dog to the game to celebrate mascot Mad Dog’s birthday.

Tickets to Sunday’s “Bark in the Bowl” game and all Philadelphia Wings home games are available online at, by phone at 215-389-WING or in person at the Wells Fargo Center box office.
