Bobby Thorp made his final shot at Edith Robb Dixon Field count Friday by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime of the USILA Division III North-South All-Star game at his home field at Cabrini College.
“It felt great, it was a fun game to play in. Everybody’s having a good time, no one got hurt, that’s what it’s all about,” said Thorp, named the MVP in the South’s 12-11 victory. “The fact that it came down to the wire, I think that’s the way it’s almost supposed to be. A little dramatic, but that was fun. It was a great way to end it.”
Thorp, who led the Cavaliers to the second round of the Division III tournament and was a part of four CSAC championships at Cabrini, had three goals and an assist.
Thorp found his groove in the fourth quarter and assisted a go-ahead goal with 10:18 left in the game to put the South up 9-8. Thorp added two straight goals following his assist to extend the South lead to three.
“I was so happy when I found out the game was at Cabrini,” said Thorp, an Honorable Mention All-American this year. “It’s not a far trip for me, it’s my home field. It couldn’t have been sweeter.”
But the North came back with three straight goals of their own to tie things up at 11 with 46.1 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Thorp nearly had the game-winner earlier in overtime with a backhand shot, but was stopped by a nice save. His second shot didn’t miss.
“It was such an honor playing here. Not only on behalf of the south but on behalf of Cabrini. It is such an honor playing here,” added Thorp, who had 43 goals and 25 assists this year. “There are so many incredible players. It was a great experience and if anybody else gets the opportunity to be here they have to take it.
“It was so nice playing with guys I’ve played against over the past four years,. You get to talk with them, you get to meet with them. You get to hang out and not be competitors and be teammates. That’s fun, because that’s how you make friends.”
Lynchburg College midfielder Max Voumard (St. Augustine Prep) wasted little time getting his name on the score sheet. He put the South up 1-0 less than three minutes into the game.
