Thursday’s women’s college roundup: Swarthmore, Arcadia win

The Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team (5-1) defeated Cabrini College (0-5) 17-9 on Thursday night in non-conference action.

Freshman Lizzie Kolln finished with four goals and one assist for the Garnet to led the offense and Annalise Penikis (Strath Haven) tallied three goals on the night. Sophomore Elyse Tierney, senior Nichole Vanchieri and junior Corinne Sommi each collected two goals in the winning effort.

Sophomore Melissa Scanzano scored a game-high five goals – including four in the second half – and finished with 10 of Cabrini’s 20 shots on goal.

Junior Michelle Ammerman and freshman Connie Bowen split time between the pipes, combining for 11 saves – Ammerman collected seven in the first half.

For the Cavs, junior keeper Janel Folkmomer played a complete game making 10 saves in the effort.

Junior Emma Sipperly started the Garnet scoring with her first of the season at 29:10 to start a five-goal run for the home squad. Scanzano got the Cavaliers on board at 18:41, but Swarthmore responded with three more en route to a 9-2 advantage at halftime.

Down 14-3, the Cavs caught fire with four straight goals – including two from Scanzano – to put the Garnet in shock. The visitors did not back down the rest of the way, despite the goal deficit. Each team added two more goals to conclude the game at 17-9 in Swarthmore’s favor.

Arcadia 18, Penn State Abington 1

The Knights (2-3) won their second straight contest tonight, defeating the Nittany Lions (0-4).

The Knights scored the first six goals of the match in the first 10 minutes and never looked back. Haylee Molloy scored five times and assisted on another to lead the Knights.

Molloy scored four of the first five goals of the game for Arcadia. Her first goal was assisted by Adeline Bellesheim. Meghan Fallon scored the other goal in the first five for a 5-0 Knights lead at 21:30. Catherine Brown made it 6-0 at 20:09. Abington got on the board at 19:40, but Jenna Crothers and Kathleen Finnegan then scored free position goals for an 8-1 lead at 15:38. Molloy and Dawn Faranetta then scored unassisted tallies for a 10-1 lead. Jessica Santoli scored the final two goals of the half, the first off a Mindy Hair assist and the second off a Molloy assist for a 12-1 Knight lead at the break.
