Thursday’s boys’ HS highlights: D-town East tops Avon Grove; Springfield-D downs Ridley

Nate Wingate scored four goals and Mark Marx made 14 saves as visiting Downingtown East used a 4-1 spurt in the third period to claim a key 7-5 Ches-Mont League.
Trey Lauletta added two goals and an assist for the Cougars, who improved to 5-2 in the league and 7-5 overall.

Will Schreiner had 13 saves and five different players scored for the Devils (10-2, 4-2), who fell out fo first place.

Springfield-Delco 11, Ridley 7

Lucas Spence had two goals and three assists and Brian Todaro added two goals and three assists while Dan Dickinson scored three goals as the Cougars (7-4, 6-2) knocked the Green Raiders (10-3, 6-2) out of first place in the Central League. Radnor, an 8-6 winner over Strath Haven, takes over sole possession of first place with a 7-1 mark.

Tom Hemcher had two goals and two assists and Jack Norton added two goals and one assist while Jake Shapiro won 15 of 16 face-offs for the Red Raiders (11-2, 7-1), who took over sole possession of first place in the Central League.

Will Ohley led the Panthers with three goal and an assist.

Central Bucks South 10, Holy Ghost Prep 9, OT

Tyler McGee scored the game winner in overtime to cap a come-from-behind win over the Firebirds.

The closely contested battle featured several lead changes with the Firebirds taking a 9-7 lead with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Titans took advantage of man-up opportunities, using goals by Tyler Strayline with 4:49 remaining and another at 3:31 by Tom DiBrino to knot the score. Led by goalie Ryan Kelly’s seven fourth quarter saves, the Titans played inspired defense to send the game into OT.

Coming out of a timeout in the first possession of sudden death, McGee knifed through the Firebirds’ defense to score the game winner for the Titans (10-3, 6-2 SOL).

Brendan McGrath led the Titans with four goals while Strayline finished with two goals and an assist. Joel Zimmerman and Willie Pendleton both had a goal and two assists while DiBrino finished with one goal and one assist.. AJ Caputo and Brandon Jacobsen had critical hustle plays on defense while Tim McCrudden, Jason Sklencar and Conner Bechtel keyed the long-pole effort.

With five games remaining in the regular season, South’s 10 wins is the most for the program since 2007 and is a dramatic turnaround for a team that won only two games in 2011.

Upper Merion 10, Springfield (Montco) 9

Mike Zadroga scored a team-high five goals while Trevor Kupecky had one goal and six assists and Troy Minnich had 20 saves in goal for the Vikings in the Suburban One American win.
