Janae Zechman, who led the Shawnee girls’ lacrosse team to its first New Jersey state title in 11 years and a berth in the Tournament of Champions finals, has resigned.

Zechman – who took a year off in 2012 for a maternity leave – left to spend more time with her family, Shawnee assistant athletic director Rich Dodd said.

The Renegades finished 19-3 last year and claimed the Group 4 state title before bowing to undefeated and arch-rival Moorestown in the TOC finals. Shawnee finished ranked No. 23 in the Rankings.

Zechman, whose career record is 95-12, was named South Jersey Coach of the Year by and four other Philly area media outlets.

Zechman took her team to the TOC finals despite the loss of senior captain Katie Kernan, who was forced to miss the year due to complications of brain cancer.

Zechman also is known for coaching Shawnee to a 7-6 win over Moorestown in the 2010 South Jersey Group 3 finals. The victory snapped Moorestown’s 228-game in-state win streak.
