From the PLA
Registration is open for the 2013 Philadelphia Lacrosse Association Golf Classic on Monday, October 14th at Bidermann Golf Club in Wilmington.
Your participation will support the PLA’s mission to promote the game of lacrosse in the region, particularly the New Start Program, which provides technical and financial assistance to new lacrosse programs. The PLA has provided close to $350,000 in grant support to new lacrosse programs in the area since the outing’s inception in 1993.
Last year’s PLA Golf Classic at White Manor involved 96 golfers and 63 individual and corporate sponsors and raised over $17,500.
The proceeds enabled the PLA to continue its support of the PIAA Public Lacrosse League and youth and middle programs in Philadelphia. Golf Classic proceeds also helped the PLA conduct high school and youth coaches’ clinics (including the first ever Northeast Pennsylvania clinic in Scranton as well as the annual Berks County, Lehigh County, SEPYLA and EPSLA coaches’ clinics), sponsor area charitable tournaments that keep Philadelphia lacrosse in the spotlight (including the Katie Samson Tournament, the Nick Colleluori Classic, Checking for Cancer and EvanFest), and host the 2013 Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Whitemarsh Country Club in February.
The PLA is pleased that Vicmead Hunt Club and Bidermann will host the 21st Annual Classic. Originally, the 9-hole private course of Henry Francis du Pont at his Winterthur estate, Bidermann was enlarged, redesigned and established as a private club in 1965 (it later merged with Vicmead). The course offers a traditional style parkland layout with native grasslands separating each golf hole. It is an enjoyable, yet challenging, golf course surrounded by the scenic beauty and serenity of the Brandywine Valley.
Below is a flyer with more information regarding the event and its festive format. The PLA welcome your and your company’s participation and sponsorship to help ensure the outing’s success. Among other things, all sponsors, patrons and (if applicable) their logos (and websites) will be promoted in press releases and on the new PLA website, which will be launched this fall.
Please reserve your spot in the outing by registering for the event as soon as possible, but in any event before Monday, October 7th. We have established a new PLA Golf Outing website and encourage you to register on-line (see http://www.plagolfouting.com/). If you are not a golfer or cannot attend the golfing activities, you are welcome to attend the cocktail reception and banquet that begins at 5:30 pm. Space in the outing is limited and registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

THE COURSE
Bidermann Golf Club — one of the “must play” courses in the Philadelphia region – was originally the 9-hole private course of Henry Francis du Pont at his Winterthur estate. In the mid-1960s, the course was enlarged to 300 acres, at which time it was redesigned and established as a private club. Architect Dick Wilson, an understudy of the iconic Bill Flynn and Howard Toomey who is considered one of the best architects of the post-World War II era with 74 golf courses to his credit – performed the redesign. The course offers a traditional style parkland layout with scenic views, rolling hills, ponds and native grasslands, which separate each golf hole and give the course a “links” feel in some places. Bidermann, a hidden gem immediately adjacent to Winterthur, will be alive with dramatic colors in the fall.
