TOWSON, Md. – Notes on Philly players that appear to be in the running for roster spots for the next cutdown during action this weekend in the USA National Team tryouts at Goucher College. The squad, being coached by Richie Meade (Furman), will be cut to 46 players in preparation for the 2014 Federation of International (FIL) Lacrosse World Championships July 10-19 in Denver.
Goalie –Drew Adams (Springfield-Delco, Penn State) is in the running for the one of the three spots. Penn State senior Austin Kaut (Springfield-Delco) is behind the more experienced goalies.
Face-Off specialist – Both Greg Gurenlian (Springfield-Delco, Penn State) and Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep, Johns Hopkins) are in the running. Dolente has to overcome size disadvantages; Gurenlian is coming off a standout MLL season.
Defense – Veteran Kyle Sweeney (Springfield-Delco, Georgetown) and MLL standout rookie Tucker Durkin (La Salle, Johns Hopkins) have shown flashes. Durkin was credited for shutting down the red-hot Steele Stanwick on Saturday night.
Midfield – One of the big stories is Virginia senior Chris LaPierre (Shawnee), who missed nearly all of last season with a knee injury and is playing with a large brace. He has looked strong, especially on the faceo-off wing where he has excelled in his career. Also showing strong play have been Villanova’s John LoCascio and former Wildcat Brian Karalunas at LSM.
Philly coaches doing evals: Brian Dougherty (Episcopal Academy, Chestnut Hill College head coach and 2010 goalie), Tony Resch (La Salle Associate Head Coach, Chesapeake Bayhawks assistant) and Kevin Cassese (Lehigh coach, 2010 player)
Three local refs in tryout pool: David Seidman, PIAA State Rules Interpreter, JT Noel (Lancaster), Mike Zeldman (NJ)
