The new dawn has arrived for the Beloit (WI) men’s lacrosse team, which begins its first season of Division III action under head coach Bob Dignazio (Strath Haven) on Feb. 24 at Fontbonne University (MO).
Dignazio’s Bucs are looking good in their Nike uniforms, STX Cell II gloves and Cascade Pro7 helmet as well as their Harrow practice gear and apparel.
The Bucs actually open with a scrimmage against Kenyon College in Ohio on Feb. 9. Kenyon is where Dignazio played and later coached as an assistant.
Beloit, located just over the border of Illinois and southwest of Milwaukee, will honor Dignazio’s brother, Steve, this year. The players will wear a Torii symbol on the back of their helmets to honor Steve – who is deployed in Afghanistan with the 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne.
The brigade nickname is the Rakkasans. The team also has three players whose dads have served in the Middle East.
Beloit will open its home season March 16 when the Buccaneers take on DePauw in the first NCAA Men’s Lacrosse game in the seventy-eight-year history of Strong Stadium.
The Bucs’ 2013 schedule is highlighted by their weeklong Spring trip to Atlanta. The trip begins on Sunday, March 3, when Beloit takes on Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. After the game, the Bucs will head to Atlanta, where they will train for the week and play Oglethorpe University and Piedmont College.
After their home opener against DePauw on March 16, the Bucs will travel to Concordia-Wisconsin for a midweek in-state matchup. Three games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools Olivet, Albion, and Calvin will follow. The Saturday, March 23, home game against Olivet will precede Beloit’s Admitted Student Open House for prospective students on Sunday and Monday.
After traveling to Calvin on March 30, the Bucs will not need to venture far from Beloit for the remainder of the season. The Bucs will host Defiance on April 6, travel to Elmhurst on April 13, and close out their 2013 season under the lights of Strong Stadium on Wednesday, April 17 against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Dignazio was a two-year regular (defensive middie and LSM) at Strath Haven and helped the Panthers reach the quarterfinals in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association playoffs in 2003 and the Round of 16 in 2004. Dignazio went on to start all four years at Kenyon, the first year at LSM and then at close defense.
