Philly women’s college roundup: Drexel, La Salle, Lafayette win; Delaware falls

The Drexel women’s lacrosse team opened the 2013 season Saturday with a dominating 10-3 win at George Washington on Saturday. The Dragons went on to score five unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes of play to rally past the Colonials. Drexel outshot George Washington, 29-19, and won 12 draw controls to the Colonials’ three.

Senior Alyse Maiden (Washington Township) led the Drexel attack with three goals and two assists for seven total points. Maiden is now tied for seventh on Drexel’s all-time assist leaderboard with 39 career assists. Fellow senior Kelli Joran (Downingtown East) also posted three goals and an assist and five draw controls in the win. Sophomore Alissa Watts and senior Kristen Kopenhaver also put points on the board for Drexel.

Defensively, Kopenhaver posted a team-high with two caused turnovers. Caroline Dodds (Great Valley) made her first collegiate start for Drexel and tallied two ground balls. Jocelyn Quaile (Clearview Regional), Kaitlin Harris (Archbishop Carroll), and Kopenhaver each picked up a pair of ground balls against the Colonials.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teresha Bradley (Rancocas Valley) made her second career start between the pipes for the Dragons. She recorded six stops for a new season-high.

Drexel 12, Mount St. Mary’s 6

Erin McCabe scored three goals as La Salle doubled up on Mount St. Mary’s in the season opener for both squads at McCarthy Stadium.

Kelly Furman (Boyertown) put together a four-point day on two goals and two assists, and Katelyn Fay (Henderson) and Lauren McDermott (North Penn) also recorded two apiece for the Explorers (1-0).

Lafayette 12, Marist 8

Seniors Cammie Linville and Jessica Rothstein (Harriton) led the way with three goals apiece for the Leopards.

Lafayette added contributions from senior Addie Godfrey and junior Ana White (Strath Haven), who each chipped in with two goals and two assists. Freshman Carlianne McCabe notched her first career goal, while senior Victoria Maxon netted her first goal of the season.

Linville led the Leopards with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Laura Kleiber and White both grabbed three ground balls. White and Laura Rowan (Strath Haven) were tied for second on the team with two caused turnovers.

Lafayette goalie Meghan Curtin (Penn Charter) got the win making three saves.

Georgetown 16, Delaware 12

Kelyn Freedman (Radnor) had three goals and an assist and two draw controls and Kristen Bandos (Notre Dame) scored twice while Courtney Caputo (Springside School) had a goal to lead the Hoyas in a season opener for the Blue Hens.

Delaware sophomore Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood), the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, picked up right where she left off as she led the Blue Hens with a career-high five goals and also dished out an assist. McCartney has now recorded seven hat tricks and 13 multiple-goal games in just 16 career outings.

Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) added two goals and an assist for the Blue Hens while Allison Hahn added two goals, Shannon Burns (Springfield-Delco) scored a goal and added three draw controls, and freshman Alison Karwoski (Great Valley) contributed eight draw controls in her collegiate debut.

Division III

Pomona Pitzer (CA) 15, Occidental 12

Ally McLaughlin (Harriton) had two goals, two assists, three GBs, two DCs and two CTs as PP earned its first win of the year.
