This is one of a series of previews for the 2013 Philly lacrosse season

Coach: Geoff Davidson, 2nd Year

2012 Record: 8-6 league, 9-8 overall; Advanced to PAC-10 Final Four playoffs, suffering a 21-9 loss to Owen J. Roberts in the semifinal round

Key Returnees: Tyler Fuhrman – Sr. Attack (2012 First Team PAC-10), Chris Lees – Sr. Midfield (2012 First Team PAC-10), Austin Mutter – Sr. Goalie, John Stewart – Sr. Defense, Alec Palladino – Sr. Attack, Chris Stutzman – Jr. Midfield

Coach’s comments/Outlook: “A lot of players saw their first varsity time last season. This year we hope to build on that experience and contend for the league title along with a spot in the district playoffs. We are an experienced team after last season and we believe this will benefit us entering this season. The strength of the team is our experience on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. The weakness for our team will be rebuilding the midfield after graduating 4 of our top midfielders last year. We have some seniors and juniors that we are confident in to help us reach our goal of a league title and district playoff berth. The key to achieving this goal is to finish our games by playing the entire 48 minutes to the final whistle.”

Coach: Nathanael Ryan (4t hSeason)

2012 Record: 6-8 league, 6-12 overall

Key Returnees: Luke Herber (SR. Attack), Ben Schimpf (SR. Midfield), Kevin Markle (SR. Midfield), Matt McClay (SR. Midfield), Zach Roumaya (SR. Defense), Ben Miller (SR. Defense), Dustin Keim (SR. Defense)

Key newcomers: David Michael (SR. Defense), Andrew DeSana (JR. Defense, honorable mention all-league in 2012), Keith White (Soph. Attack), Jake Blitzer (Soph. Goalie) Dom Germano (Jr. Midfield)

Coach’s comments/outlook: “Overall, the team looks forward to playing a very challenging out-of-league schedule and being competitive in doing so. We return our entire starting defense and goalie and while we need to replace an All-League LSM (Gabe Ferraro) we have a number of talented young players vying for that position. We return three starting midfielders so we should have some strong experience there and while we are at our youngest at attack, I think we have some nice talent competing for playing time. We look to our experienced players to help us to challenge for a PAC-10 Final Four spot, compete for a league title as well as a district playoff berth.”

Owen J. Roberts

Coach: Jeff Neese, 13thseason

2012 Record: 13-1 league (tied for first place in regular season), 14-7 overall; Lost to Bishop Shanahan 13-6 in the first round of districts; Opened PAC-10 Final Four playoffs with a 21-9 victory over Boyertown before falling to Spring-Ford 9-8 in the title clash

Ryan Kent (M), first team all-league in 2012, 39 goals
John Pennell (A), second team all-league in 2012, 38 goals, 33 assists

Coach’s comments/outlook: “We lost 10 seniors, which opens up a lot of opportunities for the younger players. We are looking to win back the PAC-10 and move on in districts.”

2012 record: 3-11 league, 4-14 overall

Sophomores: Jacob Bevenour (M), Jacob Koury (A), Wayne Mitchell (A), Colin Dahl (D), Michael Frazier (G)

Coach’s comments/outlook: “In my first season as head coach, I am excited to continue building the Pope John Paul boys’ lacrosse program. PJP is aiming to improve upon its record again this year and is showing a lot of promise with over 50 kids gearing up for the season. From day one the team has been very enthusiastic and willing to learn and has shown much improvement during preseason. The Golden Panthers will get plenty of solid upperclass leadership from seniors Matt Eads, Tyler Eads and Josh Bildstein as well as juniors Michael Wynne, John Bildstein and Andrew Glass. In between the pipes there will be stiff competition between junior, Ian Shurr, and sophomore, Michael Frazier.”

Coach’s comments/outlook: “We are a young team with a handful of senior leaders to anchor us. We have some rising talent and a new enthusiasm that I believe will make us better as a team and more competitive. Our goals this year are to improve from last year’s record, develop our team chemistry, and expand our overall game.”
