Hofstra sophomore goalie Matt Boyer, an Owen J. Roberts graduate, has earned a roster spot on the Hofstra men’s lacrosse team as a walk-on.
Boyer will make a Philly homecoming today when the Pride competes in the 7th Annual Nick Colleluori Classic at Ridley High. Boyer’s brother, Andrew, is a senior goalie at nearby St. John’s who also made the team as a walk-on.
Matt Boyer log:
High school: Owen J. Roberts, Class of 20012
High school honors: Posted 209 saves and had a 61% save percentage, garnering 1st team PAC-10 and 1st team Pottstown Mercury All-Area honors in 2012, leading the team to a 14-7 record and a berth in the district 1 tournament.
How did the tryouts go at Hofstra? “When I tried out (in 2012) they had five goalies already, but coach (Seth Tierney) told us three were graduating and they were only bringing in one (this year. I knew a spot would open if I could play at that level. I hit the weight room four or five days a week and in the summer I took shots probably three days a week with kids from my high school team back home.
“I always knew I was good enough to play Division I lacrosse, I never thought I had the proper recognition. My brother was a standout athlete who won PAC-10 championships; I looked up to him as a role model and I wanted to grab a slice of the pie, metaphorically speaking.”
What is your role on the team? “My role is to help the shooters get better, improve myself and try to help the team be as good as it can be.”
What are your thoughts heading into the Nick Colleluori Classic? “It’s a dream come true to be honest with you. (Ridley) is my grandmom’s hometown and it was her birthday (Friday). My whole family is coming.
“It’s really cool; the whole program has kind of grown and developed around the HEADstrong Foundation. They say Nick Colleluori had a real great mentality. He was a winner all the way through.”
