College roundup: Sturgis leads PSU to win; Wolf is strong for Duke in loss

Led by four-goal performances from TJ Sanders (Orillia, Ont.) and Shane Sturgis (Downingtown East), No. 15 Penn State men’s lacrosse defeated host Michigan, 11-6, in a season opener.

Goaltender Austin Kaut (Springfield-Delco.) made 12 saves for the Nittany Lions while Jack Forster (La Salle) had two goals and an assist and freshman Tommy O’Neill (St. Augustine Prep) had two assists.

Denver 14, Duke 12

Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion) had four goals and three assist but the Blue Devils dropped their opener at home.

Duke’s defense was led by Billy Conners (Malvern Prep), who had three groundballs; Henry Lobb (Malvern Prep), who had one groundball and a caused turnover; and Brian Dailey (Conestoga), who had one groundball. Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) had eight saves.

Bellarmine 9, Robert Morris 8

Defenseman Michael Bender (Emmaus) had four groundballs and two caused turnovers for the winning Knights in their opener.

Brothers Eric Rankel and Tyler Rankel (Downingtown West) started together for the losing Colonials. Eric Rankel, a true freshman, had a goal and two assists and Tyler had two groundballs and took 12 face-offs as a fill-in for the team’s injured FOGO.

Redshirt sophomore Joseph Scenna (Perkiomen Valley) collected a career-high five ground balls and added his first-career caused turnover for Robert Morris.

Navy 20, Holy Cross 7

Sean Reilly (Central Bucks East) won 13 of 18 face-offs and Ben Samspon (Emmaus) had five groundballs for the Midshipmen.

Florida 5, North Carolina 3

Emily Garrity (Strath Haven) had an assist, two draw controls and a caused turnover, Margaret Corzel (Merion Mercy) had three groundballs and two caused turnovers and Kelly Devlin (Downingtown East) played solid defense for the Tar Heels in a tough loss among Top 5 teams.
