Men’s recruits: Goalie Shea (Conestoga) heads newcomers for Union

The Union men’s lacrosse team will add 15 student-athletes in 2013, head coach Paul Wehrum announced on Tuesday. Union, ranked No. 17 by Lacrosse Magazine in its preseason poll, will open the season at home on March 2 against No. 1 Cortland.

“I’m extremely pleased with this recruiting class,” Wehrum said. “With the graduating class last year being one of the finest in the history of the program, we have a lot of shoes to fill. We’re extremely excited to see how they do.”

Brody Shea
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 210
Position: Goalie
Hometown: Wayne, PA
High School: Conestoga

Shea was a two-year player and started his senior year in net at Conestoga, which earned two PIAA State championships during his time with the program. Shea was also three-year player on the varsity hockey team.

“Brody is the top freshman goalie at Union and his size and positioning will help provide depth in net,” Wehrum said.

Paul Alberti
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 180
Position: Attack
Hometown: Madison, CT
High School: Daniel Hand/Avon Old Farms

Alberti was named captain at Daniel Hand High School, where he was a two time all-conference and all-state attack. In his post-graduate year at Avon Old Farms, his team won a Founder’s League championship. Alberti finished his high school career with 267 career points.

“Paul will be heavily counted upon to play attack and midfield for the Dutchmen this spring,” Wehrum said.

Austin Bannister
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 170
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Kingston, MA
High School: Catholic Memorial

Bannister was a four year varsity starter and two-year captain at Catholic Memorial, where he was a two-time all-conference player. He finished his career as the school’s all-time leading point scorer. Bannister led the team to its first conference championship in school history.

“Austin brings a great deal of offensive firepower to the team,” Wehrum said. “He could be vital in our man-up unit as a freshman.”

Dan Caiola
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 185
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: Katonah, NY
High School: John Jay-Cross River

Caiola was a two year starter on defense and captain of the lacrosse team at John-Jay Cross River, where he earned all-section honors his senior year. A three year starter in football, Caiola was also an all-state football player. Caiola also plays football at Union.

“Dan is an aggressive tough defenseman that will challenge for a starting spot,” Wehrum said.

Brady Collins
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 210
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: West Hartford, CT
High School: Conard

Collins was a two year starter on defense at Conard High School, where he earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-State honors.

“Brady brings a great deal of experience on the defensive side of the ball and will add depth to the team’s strong defensive corps,” Wehrum said.

Alex D’Amario
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 205
Position: Attack
Hometown: Niskayuna, NY
High School: Niskayuna

A Niskayuna High School graduate in 2011, D’Amario was a starter and member of Niskayuna’s Section 2 championship team in 2010. D’Amario was voted the most improved player on the team. He also participated in the Adirondack Empire State games.

“Alex is an outstanding goal-scorer with a high lacrosse IQ,” Wehrum said. “These traits will serve him well at Union.”

Spencer Gorham
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 205
Position: Midfield
Hometown: McLean, VA
High School: Langley

A three-year starter at Langley High School in Virginia, Gorham had a 65% faceoff percentage. He was named to All-Liberty District Team and his high school team won the Virginia VHSL state championship in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

“Spencer will push our starting faceoff man Alex Stone and compete for minutes in the spring,” Wehrum said.

Sean Hanley
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 190
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: Rockville Center, NY
High School: Chaminade

Hanley played defense for the nationally-ranked Chaminade lacrosse program that won a state championship in 2011 and finished the 2012 season with a record of 16-2. Hanley was also a two-year starter on the Chaminade football team.

“Sean is an outstanding athlete with great range and will be heavily counted on in the defensive end for the Dutchmen,” Wehrum said.

Kyle Irwin
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 195
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Garden City, NY
High School: Chaminade

Irwin played midfield on the 2011 Chaminade Catholic Class AAA State Championship team, where he was teammates with Sean Hanley.

“Irwin is a strong two-way midfielder,” Wehrum said. “Kyle will be expected to play offense and defense and contribute in the faceoff circle at Union.”

Adam Johnson
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: Wellesley, MA
High School: Wellesley

A two-year starter on defense at Wellesley, Johnson’s team finished a perfect 20-0 in 2011 and lost in the Eastern Massachusetts State Finals in 2012.

“Adam is a tough, hard-nosed defenseman and comes from one of the top programs in the country,” Wehrum said.

Adam Sands
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 240
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: Greenwich, CT
High School: Greenwich

Adam was a captain and three-year starter on defense at Greenwich where they won the FCIAC. He ended his high school career for Greenwich by recording 71 groundballs to earn First Team All-State and First Team All-FCIAC honors. Adam transferred to Union from Division-I Lehigh, where he saw action in five games last season.

“Adam’s outstanding stick and defensive ability will allow him to contend for a starting spot on the Union defense,” Wehrum said.

Cameron Slatton
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 140
Position: Attack
Hometown: Billerica, MA
High School: Billerica Memorial

A four-year starter at Billerica Memorial, Cameron was a captain his senior year, where he was team MVP and three-time MVC All-Conference. Slatton finished his career as the No. 3 all-time scorer at Billerica with 297 points. A two-year football starter, Cameron was captain of the team and twice earned all-conference honors.

“Cam’s outstanding speed and quickness will give us the ability to use him on both midfielder and attack his freshman year,” Wehrum said.

Tom Stanton
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 175
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Hingham, MA
High School: Catholic Memorial

Stanton, a Catholic Memorial teammate of Austin Bannister, earned First Team All-Conference honors and was an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star. He was a member of the first Catholic Conference championship team in school history. A midfielder, Stanton finished his career with 74 career points.

“Tom is an outstanding two-way midfielder that is a great addition to our program considering the rules changes this year that place a high value on his skill set,” Wehrum said.

Nolan Stauffer
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 165
Position: Attack
Hometown: Redding, CT
High School: Joel Barlow

Stauffer won the Connecticut Class S state championship at Joel Barlow, where he was named the Southwest (Conn.) Conference Offensive Player of the Year with 125 points. Stauffer was a First-Team All-Conference, All-State and All-American honoree.

“Nolan is an outstanding offensive player that will be pressing to start this season up front as an attack,” Wehrum said.

Patrick Sullivan
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 200
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Buffalo, NY
High School: St. Francis/Holderness

A three-sport athlete at St. Francis, Sullivan earned all-league honors in lacrosse. He spent a post-graduate year at Holderness. Sullivan also plays football at Union.

“Patrick is another solid two-way player who will provide depth in the midfield at Union,” Wehrum said.
