College wrap: James (SJ Prep) leads High Point; Sankey, Creighton, Durkin star

Freshman Brad James (St. Joseph’s Prep) had a goal, two assists, two groundballs and two caused turnovers as the host High Point University men’s lacrosse team surprised Towson, 9-7, for its first win in program history on Friday afternoon at Vert Stadium.

Defenseman Pat Farrell (St. Joseph’s Prep) headed the backline for High Point (1-1). Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East) had a goal for Towson.

North Carolina 16, Air Force 8

Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) collected three goals, one assist, four groundballs and a caused turnover and Ryan Creighton (Malvern Prep) had three goals and three groundballs to pace the Tar Heels in their opener.

Freshman Steve Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and three groundballs and LSM Ryan Kilpatrick (Salesianum) had a caused turnover for UNC.

Air Force got four caused turnovers and two groundballs from freshman defenseman Alex Warden (Garnet Valley) and an assist from Keith Dreyer (Malvern Prep) while freshmen defenseman Brenden Coleman (CB East) had two groundballs.

Johns Hopkins 15, Siena 6

Senior All-American defenseman Tucker Durkin (La Salle) had five groundballs and three caused turnovers and Drew Kennedy (Malvern Prep) won 5 of 6 face-offs as the Blue Jays coasted in their opener.

Duke 17, Virginia Tech 9

Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy) had two goals to lead the Blue Devils in their opener.

Northwestern 16, UMass 4

Goalie Bridget Bianco (Moorestown) had six saves as the Wildcats coasted.
