From Press Release
The HEADstrong Foundation™ proudly announced this week the expansion of their Southeastern, Pennsylvania based lacrosse club to include two new teams for 2014 which will target players from both Montgomery and Bucks counties.
The expansion of HEADstrong North™, as it will be called, will consist of a select U13 and U15 team that will be led by two renowned coaches who have devoted themselves over past 20 years to educating and developing some of the nation’s top lacrosse players. La Salle College High School’s Bill Leahy and Tony Resch were introduced this week as the coaches that will spearhead the new HEADstrong expansion teams.
Team HEADstrong North™ is committed to developing the highest caliber athletes while teaching players the importance of sportsmanship, character and giving back to the community and to the game. An emphasis will be placed on making a difference in the local blood cancer community through service and generating of funds to support the HEADstrong Foundation’s service mission.
Team HEADstrong North™ will promote blood cancer awareness on the field wearing HEADstrong’s signature lime green helmets, gloves and uniforms. Lime Green is the National awareness color for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the disease that affected Founder Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori. The highly competitive teams will compete both locally and nationally in tournaments.
Inspired by the story of Mr. Colleluori, combined with their own life experiences, Leahy and Resch together are on a mission to bring further meaning and awareness to lacrosse players and families in Montgomery and Bucks counties. Both Leahy and Resch possess a well-established track record of service within the community and hope to provide an unmatched and unforgettable experience which will pair lacrosse instruction with life coaching. The program will combine the core values of La Salle College High School with the philanthropy and service mission of the HEADstrong Foundation in an effort to build well-rounded student-athletes.
HEADstrong General Manager Brian Neary, along with coaches Eddie Graham and Eddie DiDonato, who are involved with HEAStrong’s high school recruiting teams, have all been coached by Leahy and Resch while attending La Salle College High School.
Coach Leahy, a Guidance Counselor at La Salle, has always been a coach who believes in empowering his players and the importance of being a positive role model, sharing life lessons and making a difference within the community through the sport. Over the past 20 years he has built a legacy having served as the Head Coach of La Salle College High School.
He has achieved an overall record of 380-76 (255-4 in the Catholic League) which includes the 2004, 2008, & 2009 PA State Championship, 2005 & 2007 EPSLA Finals, 2010 & 2011 PIAA Finals, 2006 EPSLA Final Four and 17 Philadelphia Catholic League Championships. He is a 1992 graduate of Loyola College in Maryland where he played and coached midfield and was considered a face-off specialist.
From 1995-1996 he played forward for the Philadelphia Wings. Coach Leahy coached the 2007 U.S. South Under Armour All-American Team. In 2010, Coach Leahy was the first lacrosse coach to be inducted into the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Philadelphia Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Resch, also a Guidance Counselor at La Salle, is considered by many to be one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport of lacrosse. While his resume includes World Championships with multiple professional lacrosse franchises, Resch will now join forces with the HEADstrong Foundation to face-off against blood cancer.
His experience in the game of lacrosse is extensive as he was a player for Penn Charter High School and an All-American at Yale University. After college he went on to play for the United States World Team and later became the Head Coach at the William Penn Charter School and then for Philadelphia’s professional indoor team the Wings.
Coach Resch served as the Head Coach of the 2x World Champion (MLL) Philadelphia Barrage. In 2006 & 2008 he was named MLL “Coach of the Year”. He has recently served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the last Lacrosse World Games and served as an assistant coach for the 2012 MLL Champion Chesapeake Bayhawks.
HEADstrong North™ will host open tryouts on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Tryouts will be held at La Salle College High School and a $40 donation to HEADstrong Foundation will apply per player.
“It is an honor for La Salle College High School, Tony Resch, and me to partner with the HEADstrong family in pursuit of such a mission driven cause, and the development of future lacrosse players.” says Leahy
“We are proud to welcome Team HEADstrong North to our Southeastern Pennsylvania lacrosse family. While it is humbling to see the growth of the HEADstrong Foundation throughout the country it is even more encouraging and inspiring to see the commitment that coaches, players and families are making in our own backyard,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom. “We welcome the commitment, the passion and the experience that both Bill Leahy and Tony Resch bring to the table and we look forward to collaborating together to build an incredible experience for our players and their families.
“It is heartwarming to see so many kids finding strength and inspiration in the life of my son and our Founder Nicholas. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to Coaches Leahy and Resch and applaud your efforts in joining our Team of Champions.”
