Brendan Manderack was still miffed about it two days later.

Radnor’s senior All-EPLCA goalie had been fantastic in Tuesday’s District One semifinal against Garnet Valley, but he couldn’t begin to forget how Matt Taulane ripped a wide-open shot past him for the overtime winner.

“I’m using that as my fuel today,” Manderack said before the Red Raiders took on Conestoga in the third-place game at West Chester Henderson.

Forty-eight minutes of play later, that much was obvious. Manderack turned away 13 shots and Jake Shapiro’s faceoff win after Pierre Atkinson trimmed Radnor’s lead to one sealed the Red Raiders’ 8-7 win.

Radnor moves on to face District 12 champion La Salle in the first round of the PIAA tournament Wednesday. Conestoga takes on District 3 champion Manheim Township. Both games are Wednesday at times and sites to be determined.

“A lot, actually,” Manderack said when asked how much he thought about Taulane’s goal. “But you’ve got to move on from it and kind of use the negativity and put it into a positive and use it as fuel. (Wednesday) at practice we went hard, so you move forward.”

The Red Raiders (18-4) bounced back initially by jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Peter Donato had three goals and one assist in the 13 minutes and 15 seconds and freshman Jack Wilson tallied a nice goal to cap Radnor’s big run. Atkinson’s second of the game capped a 4-0 run that tied things up for the Pioneers, but Alex Manderack and Connor Burns replied to put the Red Raiders up 8-6.

Atkinson scored again with 14 seconds, but Shapiro’s last faceoff win made sure Conestoga never threatened again. Many wondered aloud if either team would be inclined to lose on purpose in order to avoid La Salle, something that was quickly brushed aside by both teams.

“It’s always a regular game against Radnor,” Atkinson said. “They’re our arch-rival. We like to beat ’em. We didn’t try to lose.

“We put our hearts out there trying to get that ‘W’.” We just started off slow, but got the hang of it after halftime.”

Was the intensity there for Radnor?

“Heck yeah. We brought it like it was the Super Bowl,” Brendan Manderack said. “We had a talk yesterday and said, ‘if you don’t want to come out and win this game, don’t get on the bus and that’s how we played. Check the stats. We wanted it.”
