Brian Gallagher scored three goals while Will Dulin, Joey Lomady and Hunter Jones each added a pair as host Abington opened its season Friday by toppling Downingtown West, 9-6, in non-league boys’ lacrosse.

Eric Goldsborough made 12 saves in goal while Austin Pifani was strong at the face-off X while leading the Ghosts’ defense. Other key defenders were Gague Gormley and Christian Werner while long poles Pat McCormick and middies Matt Gormley and Gus Greenberg also played key roles.

Abington coach and grad Joe Staerk won in his coaching debut.

“It’s a great opening game,” he said. “Downingtown was ranked. But we are not scared of anybody.

“Our guys played their hearts out and we had strong defense and goaltending. Our offense is picking up the system quickly. We had some trouble with groundballs, but I think we are going to be a team to contend with.”
