Episcopal Academy (8-3, 3-0), which won its seventh straight game and entered play ranked No. 2 by, is now tied with Haverford School atop the Inter-Ac. The Friars (7-1, 2-1), who suffered their first loss of the year, came in as the No. 1 team.

“It is a really big win for our team in the conference,” said Strain. “This was a big hurdle and big for our confidence. But we can’t overlook Penn Charter on Friday. We are looking forward to playing the rest of the schedule.”

Strain scored the tying goal after sophomore goalie Colin Reder (six saves) left the cage to double a Malvern Prep player and helped cause a turnover and a groundball that was picked up by EA’s Tyler Chambers. The ball went to Strain at midfield and he squeezed one past Matt Barrett (nine saves).

“Colin left the cage to double and got a big groundball,” said Strain.

The game-winner came after another big EA take away and a Trupert Ortlieb dodge.

“Trupert did a good job beating his man and dished off to me after a slide,” said Strain. “I did my best to get it off. I wasn’t even looking at the goal. I just turned and shot. I got lucky.”

Dutch Buckley and Tyler Chambers each had a goal and two assists for EA while Curtis Zappala had a goal and an assist and Ortlieb, Peter Gayhardt and Benjamin Valdes each scored once. Matt Ernst won 11 of 19 face-offs.

Ryan Hilburn led Malvern Prep with three goals while Chris Hilburn had two goals and Tommy O’Connor had a goal and an assist.
