Conestoga bolted to a 6-0 first-quarter lead and claimed an 11-6 victory today over host Penncrest, giving the Pioneers boys’ lacrosse team a share of the Central League championship.
Conestoga finished tied with Radnor at 10-1; the Pioneers had won the past two titles outright.
Zach Schleicher had three goals and an assist, Jake Scott had two goals and two assists and Matt Schleicher scored two goals while Robbie Zonino made 11 saves for the Pioneers (10-8 overall).
Penncrest (11-5, 6-5) did draw within 8-5 at halftime, but the Conestoga defense clamped down and the Pioneers scored three goals to open the second half while face-off specialist Christian Jobs had a strong half against Lions ace Dylan Protesto.
“This is a much-improved team,” said Conestoga coach Brian Samson. “We’ve had highs and lows, but we’ve never stopped competing.
“I credit the senior leadership throughout the year and my terrific staff of coaches who have worked tirelessly to help the team improve. I am excited to enter the District 1 playoffs with this group.”
Protesto and Sean Mingey each scored twice and Will Manganiello had a goal and an assist for Penncrest.
