BOYDS, Md. – Pennsylvania (Pool B) was the only undefeated team and New Jersey used a key 6-5 win over Syracuse to earn the top seed in Pool A as the Final Four was set for the girls’ playoffs at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic following Day 2 action Tuesday at the Maryland Soccerplex.
Pennsylvania (4-0 in pool play, 5-0 overall), last year’s runnerup, will play three-time defending champion Maryland (3-1) at 9 a.m. today in one semifinal. The other semifinal pits New Jersey (3-1) vs. Long Island (2-1-1). The title game is at 11 a.m.
New Jersey, which fell to Maryland, 10-7, on Monday, vaulted itself to the top spot in Pool A with its victory over previously-undefeated Syracuse and a 9-5 win over Illinois.
“Today we worked a lot on transition and we really came together and became a team,” said New Jersey’s Jenna McNicholas (2015 MF, Staples, Westport, CT), who had two goals in the Illinois triumph. “Going into the Syracuse game, we were nervous.
“We got momentum with the win. We are coming together and communicating. I’ve made some really good friends; it’s exciting.”
Dakota Pastore (2015 MG, Somerville) and Taylor Patrizi (2014 MF, Cherry Hill East) each scored twice in the win over Syracuse and Brittany Read (2014, Eastern Regional) had five saves in the second half for New Jersey.
Pennsylvania had a key 9-6 win over Long Island to clinch the Pool B title as Corrie Anderson (2014 ATT, Hershey) had four goals and Kira Gensler (2014 MF, Spring-Ford) added a pair.
In the Middle School playoffs, two-time defending champion Pennsylvania meets Long Island at 8 a.m. while New Jersey and Syracuse square off in the other semifinal at 8 a.m. The title game is at 10 a.m.
