LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Carly Demato scored off a Caroline Shinske feed with 1:16 left in the first overtime period today as Shawnee defeated Summit, 13-12, in a thrilling New Jersey Tournament of Champions semifinal at Monmouth University.

The win vaults the Group 4 champion Renegades (19-2) into the first T of C final Saturday (at Kean University, 7:30 p.m.) vs. today’s Moorestown-Oak Knoll winner.

Shawnee’s Shannon Nugent was a standout with five goals, including the game-tying tally from Demato with 1:57 to play. Nugent also had given her team a short-lived 11-10 lead with 6:40 to play after the Renegades had killed off a two-minute man-down situation.

After that goal, Summit (18-5) freshman Sara Syznal (four goals) tied it with 3:40 to play and Stephanie Ford scored off a Shawnee turnover with 2:24 left in regulation.

After Demato’s game-winner, Summit committed a penalty off a botched free position and the renegades were a man up for most of the second 3-minute overtime period.

“After it happened I thought, ‘Dear God, I hope that’s it,’” said Demato about the game-winning goal. “When they got that penalty I thought if we just got the draw we’d have it.”

Added Nugent: “Literally, I was the best feeling we ever had. It was a beautiful play and a great pass by Shinske.

“Our thoughts (on overtime) were basically, ‘It’s 0-0 and we only have six minutes to go so we need to go as hard as we can and leave it all on the field.’”

Erin Smith added three goals for Shawnee while Shinske and Demato each had two goals and three assists. Lily Argyle had nine saves.

Kady Glynn was strong for Summit (Group 2 champion) in goal with 12 saves and Stuart Humphrey had four goals.

Nugent is excited to get the chance to play Moorestown in the state finals. She noted that she and others from Shawnee play club lacrosse with many of the Moorestown players.

“It’s such a great rivalry between both of us,” she said. “We saw them early in the season and we are so excited to get the chance to play them again.

“It’s weird when we play each other. I play on their summer team and I know how each of them plays. It’s weird knowing we are good friends, but on field it’s not like that at all. It’s a big rivalry.”

“We want Moorestown,” added Demato. “We want the rematch. This is what we worked for. When we lost to them we knew this (state finals) was the only way we were going to get them again.

“I am great friends with some of them and I am going to their graduation party. I have been playing with them for five years. But when we step on the field we are Shawnee and they are Moorestown.”
