District 1 boys’ fifth-place state qualifier: Great Valley claims final PIAA berth

Ethan Joseph scored five goals and Greg Merrill had four goals and an assist as Great Valley defeated Ches-Mont League rival Downingtown East for the first time very and gained the fifth and final District 1 berth for the PIAA tournament.

The eighth-seeded Patriots (18-5) advance to play District 1 runner-up Garnet Valley in the first round of the state tourney Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.

Tyler Haines added three goals for the Pats and Dylan Buettner had a goal and four assists.

The two teams had tied with Avon Grove (District 1 champion) and Bishop Shanahan for the league title this year.

Great Valley seized a 12-5 third-quarter lead until inclement weather caused a delay. The Cougars (14-8) fought back to make it closer as Brandyn O’Connell collected five goals and two assists
