Ben Winebrake scored three goals and Mike Sowers added two goals and five assists as visiting Upper Dublin rallied past Plymouth Whitemarsh, 10-7, today to finish as the undefeated Suburban One American Conference boys’ lacrosse champions.

The Cardinals (16-1 overall) closed a 14-0 league season. Last week they clinched their first crown since 2009, when they also finished undefeated in the league.

“It’s always a battle when we come to play Plymouth Whitemarsh,” said Upper Dublin coach J.P. Banks. “I was proud of the way our kids came back and fought hard in the second half to get the victory.”

“It’s nice to finish undefeated in league play, especially after such a long, demanding season.”

The Cards trailed, 4-2, at halftime, but outscored the Colonials, 7-2, in the third quarter to take a 9-5 lead. They got a boost from standout freshman attackman Sowers and their defense, which held Plymouth Whitemarsh to three goals in the second half.

“I just felt like I had the match up all day, and I got a lot of help from my teammates as well,” said Sowers. “We’re looking forward to a great opportunity on Thursday against Springfield-Delco, who is a tough opponent.

“It’s a great chance for us to go out and prove something.”

Also for PW, goalie Jack Deragon made 11 saves and Ryan Siwinski was a force at the face-off X.

PW – which won three straight titles coming into the season, is 9-4 in the league and 10-6 overall.

“I am very pleased with the effort and hustle our guys showed today,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Phil Chang. “We gave them a scare in the first half.”

Corey Kelly led the Colonials with four goals and an assist and Ryan Kelly scored twice. Riley White made 14 saves.
