North Carolina sophomore attackman Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) has been named the Baltimore Sun National Player of the week.
Sankey’s career week propelled the No. 4 Tar Heels to their first two-game winning streak of the season. The 5-foot-6, 155-pound attackman set a career high with four goals in the team’s 13-5 rout of Dartmouth on March 18 and added three assists.
Sankey matched that scoring output in North Carolina’s 10-8 upset of then-No. 1 Maryland on Saturday. For the week, he scored eight goals on just 12 shots, and his seven points against the Big Green were a career best. Sankey, who is tied with senior attackman Marcus Holman for the team lead in goals with 20 and ranks second in points with 29, was named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Then on Wednesday, Sankey had four goals, an assist and five groundballs and led the No. 7 Tar Heels (6-3) to an 18-12 victory over 20th-ranked Brown. He helped the Heels overcome a five-goal effort by Brown freshman and former Inter-Ac League foe Henry Blynn (Haverford School).
