St. Joseph’s freshman attack Bonnie McShane (Merion Mercy Academy) has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today. McShane has been selected for games played during the week of March 18-24.

Making her first collegiate start in place of the injured [Bianca] Angstadt, McShane exploded for two goals and three assists en route to a season-high five-point game. Her first goal came just 3:50 into the first half as the second of a three-goal SJU run. McShane also scored the third goal (1:07, first half) of an 8-1 SJU run that broke the game open for the Hawks. The first of the rookie’s three assists marked her first collegiate assist while McShane registered four of her six shots on goal, with two of her four SOG resulting in goals.

On the season, McShane has played in three games for the Crimson and Gray en route to tallying three goals and three assists. The freshman sports a .375 shot percentage and .750 SOG percentage.

McShane and the Hawks will open Atlantic 10 action this Friday, March 29 at home against cross-city rival Temple. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.

Bucknell’s Place (Episcopal Academy) is Patriot Defensive Player of Week

Place was instrumental in Bucknell’s two road victories last week over the nation’s top two scoring offenses. The junior picked up five groundballs and logged a caused turnover as the Bison held Cornell, which entered the game leading the country averaging 15.2 goals per game, to just eight in a 9-8 victory.

After the Big Red jumped out to a 5-0 lead, the defense regrouped and yielded three tallies over the last 40 minutes of the game. On Saturday Bucknell took on Albany’s second-ranked offense (14.5 gpg) and held it scoreless over the last 14:00 to come away with an 18-12 win. Place posted five groundballs and two caused turnovers in that contest to finish with 11 and three, respectively, on the week.

UNC’s Sankey (Penn Charter) is ACC Offensive Player of Week

North Carolina sophomore attackman Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) and freshman goalkeeper Kieran Burke have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Sankey had a pair of career games as he led North Carolina to a victory over Dartmouth, 13-5, and over No. 1 Maryland, 10-8. He scored four goals in each game on only 12 total shots. The two four-goal performances set and then matched his career high.

The native of Warminster, Pa., now has seven career hat tricks. His seven points against Dartmouth were also a career high for a game as he added assists on three goals, contributing on seven of North Carolina’s 13 tallies versus the Big Green. This is Sankey’s second ACC weekly honor of the season and of his career.

Drexel’s Winkelman is CAA Rookie of Week

Drexel freshman Cal Winkelman has been named this week’s Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week. Winkelman helped lead the Dragons to a triple overtime win at No. 7 Hofstra on Saturday.

The redshirt freshman from Skaneateles, N.Y. allowed just seven goals in Drexel’s come-from-behind, 8-7 win at Hofstra. Winkelman made a career-high 12 saves, including two in the overtime period. Winkelman has started the last four games for the Dragons and has a 3-1 record with a .532 save percentage and a 9.67 goals against average. The Dragons are ranked 14th in the nation in each of the two major lacrosse polls.
