Visiting Haverford School lost more games (three) this week than it did in the past two years combined as a young team started a very uncharacteristic 0-3.

But tonight at nationally-ranked McDonogh School (MD), the youthful Fords took a major step forward by downing the Eagles, 6-5.

Drew Supinski scored two goals while Gavin McBride, Grant Ament, Reilly Hupfeldt and Timmy Brooks each scored once for the Fords, who led early and never trailed. Jake Landman excelled in goal with 13 saves as Haverford overcame struggled at the face-off X to gain a key win.

McDonogh is 4-1.

“We needed to win a game,” said Haverford School coach John Nostrant. “The kids did not enjoy being 0-3 – we didn’t lose than many games the past two years, so that didn’t sit too well with anybody – especially the seniors.

“But for them to lead this way was great. It was a great atmosphere – there were a lot of people there.”

Haverford School – which went 21-2 last year and was an undefeated National champion in 2011 – has completely rebuilt its defense with totally inexperienced players. On Friday that young crew grew up fast.

“We played very well defensively,” Nostrant said. “We still didn’t win face-offs. The fact we won by a goal and didn’t win any face-offs is amazing. Jake Landman played great and we were a little more patient on offense.

“One thing that has been consistent in the first four game is that we competed hard. I am happy the kids got a win and I am happy for the coaches.”
