The Neumann University men’s lacrosse team triumphed with their first victory of the season 10-8 against Hood College in non-conference action, Friday afternoon.
The Knights were led by Ryan O’Kane (Ridley) with three goals and two assist, Ian Coyle (Cherry Hill West) had three goals and Kevin Fonio scored (Upper Darby) two goals and one assist.
The Knights started the first period with good defensive play, but Hood struck first with 1:29 remaining in the first period. Fonio scored for the Knights to tie the score 1-1 with 10 seconds remaining in the first period and gain some momentum for the second period.
That momentum saw O’Kane scoring the next two of the four goals for the Knights. The four goal run gave Neumann a 5-3 halftime lead.
In the second half the Knights were able to keep a multi-goal lead until Hood found the back of the net in the fourth period, to trail the Knights 9-8 with 1:59 remaining in the game.
The Knights have not been in this situation this season, trying to hold off a late rally to secure the win. But on this occasion, that is exactly what Neumann did, as Coyle scored the Knights final goal with 50 seconds left in the game. The 10-8 score line was sufficient for the Knights to claim the victory.
“This was a total team effort for the guys, I enjoyed seeing most all the guys get playing time and making a huge impact,” said Coach Cory Malampy. “I can’t be happier for the boys, because when the chips were down, we battled through and came out on top.”
Bob Markunas (Ridley) was one of many to step up for the Knights grabbing six ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Alex Becker (Mt. Pleasant, DE) minded the net, as he made 18 saves in the game to preserve the Knights win.
