Jessica Mucci had a goal and six assists as the host Villanova women’s lacrosse team toppled Central Connecticut State, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Elise Bendinelli (Villa Maria Academy) led the ‘Cats (1-2) with three goals while nine players posted points. In an overall show of dominance, Villanova led nearly every statistical category for the day including a 20-8 advantage in ground balls and a 24-20 advantage in shots.
“Our goal today was to come out and protect our home field and get our first win of the season. We want to continue to build on that momentum going forward,” said Head Coach Julie Young following the contest. “It feels great to have that first win. We’ve been working hard and to make adjustments and it felt good to have that pay off and we want to build upon that for our game on Wednesday against Drexel.”
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Amanda Hirschfeld tallied eight saves in the victory while CCSU’s Morgan Tullar posted four stops in the defeat. Junior Ali Brandenburg and senior Shawna Giust each captured three draw controls on the day while and Hannah Goforth (Bishop Shanahan) led the team with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, respectively.
North Carolina 11, Penn 5
Emily Garrity (Strath Haven) had two assists, 3 GBs, 2DCs and 2 CTs while Kelly Devlin (Downingtown East) had 3DCs, 2 GBs and Margaret Corzel (Merion Mercy) added 2DCs and 1 GB for the Tar Heels.
Iris Williamson (Germantown Friends) had 2 goals, 3GBs, 1 CT and Maddie Poplawski (Springfield-Delco) had one goals, 2 GBs, 2 DCs and 2CTs for Penn (0-2).
Loyola 11, Towson 10
Sophomore Annie Thomas found classmate Hannah Schmitt (Archbishop Carroll) for the game-winning goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to give the seventh-ranked Greyhounds a win at No. 16 Towson.
With 3:40 remaining, Schmitt knocked down a pass and freshman Katrina Geiger (Haverford High) scooped up the loose ball to set the Greyhounds up for the game-winning opportunity.
Schmitt had four goals and 3GBs while Geiger had two goals, one GB and one DC and defender Maddy Lesher (Archbishop Carroll) had 2GBs and one CT. Kelly Custer (Sun Valley) led the Tigers with two goals, one assist, 2 GBs and one CT.
Rutgers 11, Monmouth 8
Rutgers coach Laura Brand-Sias (Radnor) earned her 100th career win and Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley) had a goal and an assist for the Knights.
Navy 12, Richmond 8
Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy) had two goals and three DCs to lead the Mids.
Denver 19, Louisville 13
Denver defender Kate Henrich (Germantown Academy) collected an amazing 7CTs, 6GBs and 2 DCs to spark the win.
Colleen O’Malley (Great Valley) had a goal and an assist and Cortnee Daley (Hatboro-Horsham) scored once for the Cardinals.
Duke 15, Vanderbilt 12
Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy) had two goals and 5 DCs to lead Duke while Alyssa Dunlap (Radnor) collected 3CTs, 2GBs and 2DCs and Alex Duckenfield (Strath Haven) had 2 CTs and 1 GB for Vandy.
Notre Dame 10, Duquesne 8
Leah Gallagher (Radnor) had 4GBs and one CT for Notre Dame. Kristen Gregory (Owen J. Roberts) was a standout in goal for Duquesne with 15 saves.
