The Philadelphia Wings won their second game in as many nights with a 14-12 victory over the Colorado Mammoth at Wells Fargo Center Sunday afternoon.
The victory improves Philadelphia’s record to 4-3, tied with the Buffalo Bandits for second in the NLL East, after the Wings defeated the Rochester Knighthawks 10-8 on the road Saturday night.
For the second consecutive game the Wings got off to a sluggish start, trailing 5-3 after the first quarter, before rallying to take a 9-7 lead into half. The Wings would never trail again, holding the Mammoth to just four goals after the intermission.
Six different Wings registered goals in the win, highlighted by forward Drew Westervelt with four, and three each from forward Kevin Ross and transition player Paul Rabil. Kevin Buchanan added five assists for the Wings while goal tender Brandon Miller registered 37 saves between the pipes.
Mammoth forward John Grant, Jr. cut the deficit to 9-8 early in the second half but Westervelt and Ross responded before Jones cut the Wings lead to 11-9 at the end of the third quarter.
Jones pulled the Mammoth closer with his third goal 3:25 into the fourth quarter. Wings forward Kevin Crowley made it 12-10 less than three minutes later. Jones again narrowed the lead with his fourth goal 21 seconds later.
Wings captain Brodie Merrill scored less than a minute later and Rabil completed his hat trick with 3:06 left for a 14-11 lead. Grant, Jr. scored shorthanded to pull Colorado back within two with 41 seconds remaining but playing a man down with a two-goal deficit was too much to overcome.
The Wings hit the road to play the Buffalo Bandits on Friday, March 1, before returning home to Wells Fargo Center versus the Washington Stealth on Saturday, March 9.
