The 2017 Philadelphia Freedom Lacrosse Team won the 7th-8th Grade Philadelphia Indoor Lacrosse Championship Sunday by topping Leading Edge (N.J.), 9-6.
It was a first time that Freedom had played indoor lacrosse with official box rules. The team went 3-1 in the pool play games, bowing to Leading Edge, 9-2.
But Freedom began to pick up steam in the playoffs and edged Patriot White, 9-8, on an overtime tally by Doug Jones to advance to the finals.
Freedom put it together in the championship game, bolting to an 8-3 lead. Kevin Mo was a standout in the goal while JD Carroll, Jason Reynolds, Burke McFillin and Matt LoPolito led a solid defense.
The midfield play from Michael Fay, Colby Smith, Shawn Coulter, Spencer Bicking, and Jones was also standout. Samuel Goforth, MJ Alfonso, Jack Whalen, and Dylan Teeter led a potent attack.
The tourney was run by NXTsports and ran for two days. It also featured instruction Saturday from Education Partner American Indoor Lacrosse Association, led by President-CEO and Wings Coach-GM Johnny Mouradian.
