Junior Aimee Gennaro (Archbishop Carroll) scored six goals and to lead the Navy women’s lacrosse team (1-0) to a 23-4 win over Winthrop (1-1) in its season opener on Sunday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
“We wanted to come out strong and we did that in today’s game,” said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal (Haverford High, West Chester). “I was really happy with the level of our performance. We were really clicking offensively and we played tough defensively to limit [Winthrop's] goal-scoring today.”
The Mids scored the game’s first four goals and raced out to a 14-1 lead in the first 20 minutes. Senior attacker Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy) scored all four of her goals in the game’s first 12 minutes and Gennaro scored five goals in the first 18.
Gennaro scored her six goals on just seven shots and she was one shy of her career-best goal total of seven. At one point in the first half, she scored back-to-back goals in an 11-second span. Gennaro notched her 17th-career hat trick.
Young had a career-best nine draw controls to go along with her four goals and twin sister Beth Young (Villa Maria Academy) had a goal and two groundballs. Starting defender Molly Doyle (Council Rock North) had a groundball and a caused turnover and Lindsay Rheiner (Council Rock North) had a groundball.

Cortnee Daley (Hatboro-Horsham) and Colleen O’Malley (Great Valley) each scored once to lead the Cardinals to the victory.
Duke 23, Presbyterian 0
Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy) had three goals as the Blue Devils recoded a rare shutout.
Rutgers 15, Manhattan 5
Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown) scored five goals for the Scarlet Knights.
UMass 18, USC 9
Nicole Troost (Shawnee) scored once for UMass.
