Women’s recruits: Jenkins (Bayard Rustin) leads Winthrop’s 2013 signees

Winthrop head lacrosse coach John Sung has announced the signing of 12 high school players to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA’s early signing period. The group is led by Bayard Rustin’s Paige Jenkins.

Sung’s signings include talent from Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and all will join the Eagles in the fall of 2013.

Paige Jenkins is another multi-sport competitor from Glen Mills, PA where she will graduate from Bayard Rustin High School. Jenkins played lacrosse for four years, swam for four years and played soccer and ran cross country for one year. As a lacrosse player Jenkins was a First team All-Ches-Mont selection in 2012, was a PIAA District 1 Qualifier in 2010 and 2012 and represented Team Philly at the Women’s National Tournament in 2012. As a swimmer she was a District qualifier for three years and a State qualifier in 2011.

Danielle Baker will join the Eagles out of Glenelg High School in Glenwood, MD. Baker is a four-year participant on the varsity lacrosse and field hockey teams. Baker’s lacrosse team was the county champion and regional finalist in 2009 and 2010. Her field hockey squad posted a 71-game winning streak en route to three consecutive state championships from 2010-2012.

Lauren Bundick will enter Winthrop from Dulaney High School in Baltimore, MD where she played soccer for three years and lacrosse for two years. Bundick is an Honor Roll student and the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award and was named to the All-Academic Team.

Sydney Cope is a Jarrettsville, MD native and will graduate from Notre Dame Preparatory School in 2013. Cope played lacrosse for three years and will enter Winthrop as a pre-physical therapy major.

Meagan Faust is a multi-sport athlete from Queen Anne’s County High School in Centreville, MD. Faust played lacrosse, soccer and was on the swimming team in high school. Faust was the team captain of her soccer team and guided them to the state championship game her junior year.

Rosalie Hawkins is a local product, coming to Winthrop from Fort Mill High School where she played lacrosse all four years. Hawkins was twice awarded the Coach’s Award and was named to the All-State 2nd Team her junior season.

Erika Kopf will join the Eagles from Annapolis High School in Annapolis, MD. Kopf competed in varsity field hockey and varsity lacrosse. She was a 2nd Team All-County field hockey selection in 2011 and 2012.

Alexandra Krochta is a teammate of Sydney Cope at Notre Dame Preparatory School and is from Owings Mills, MD. Krochta ran track and played lacrosse at Notre Dame Prep. She is a National Hispanic Scholar and a member of both the National Science and National Math Honor Societies.

Hadley Mabry is another local athlete and teammate of Rosalie Hawkins at Fort Mill high School. Mabry played lacrosse for four years at Fort Mill. She was named to the All-State team and was a member of the South Carolina National Team.

Grace Sisserson will be the first player to join the Eagles from Georgia where she attended Lambert High School in Cumming, GA. Sisserson played lacrosse for four years and was highly decorated. She was named to the All-County team from 2010-2012. Sisserson was a Georgia National Team alternate in 2010 and then was named to Team 2 in 2011 and Team 1 in 2012. Her junior season of 2012 also saw her named to the All-Star Team and the All-State Team. She was an Academic All-American and an All-American Honorable Mention.

Brianna Turner will enter Winthrop from Columbus, OH where she played at Dublin Coffman High School. Turner played lacrosse for three years and in 2012 was named to the All-Ohio Second Team. She earned First Team All-Conference selections in 2011 and 2012 and was also Second Team All-District the same years.

Rachelle Walko rounds out the recruiting list and hails from Hilliard, OH where she attended Hilliard Davidson High School. Walko played lacrosse, soccer and tennis in her four years. In 2011 she was named to the Ohio Capital Conference Second Team and the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. In 2012 she earned First Team honors in the Ohio Capital Conference and was named to the All-District Second Team in addition to again being named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year.

While these recruits will not join the Eagles until the fall of 2013, the current Winthrop squad will play its first season of NCAA competition starting on February 8, 2013, when the Eagles travel to Washington, DC to face Howard University. Winthrop will host its first regular-season contest against Marquette University on February 15.
