From Press Release
Missy Schweitzer (Owen J. Roberts) scored three goals in the final three minutes to end all hopes of a comeback for La Salle and give Temple lacrosse a 13-9 Atlantic 10 win on Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field.
Karly Cohen and Stephany Parcell (Interboro) led the Owls (8-5, 2-1) with four goals apiece, while Stephanie Markunas (Ridley) led all players with three assists and also scored once.
Caitlyn Brostrand and Lauren McDermott (North Penn) each scored three goals for La Salle (9-3, 2-1), with two of Brostrand’s goals coming in a 3-0 run that put the Explorers within a goal in the final four minutes.
Cohen scored on Temple’s first shot of the game for an early lead, but Brostrand’s first goal came shortly after to start a 3-0 run which gave the Explorers a 3-1 lead midway through the first half.
Markunas stopped the run with an unassisted score, and a miscue by La Salle gave Temple an own goal which tied the game at 3-3 with 6:04 left in the half. Parcell scored two of her goals in the final five minutes, giving the Owls a 5-3 lead at the break.
Temple never trailed in the second half, but La Salle tied the game at 5-5 in the first nine minutes and was within a goal, 7-6, at the midway point. Cohen scored the first and last goals of a 3-0 run over a five-minute span that appeared to have the Owls with a comfortable lead of 10-6 with 5:33 on the clock.
Brostrand started La Salle’s rally, scoring twice in a minute and a half while the Explorers got a third goal from McDermott and came within a goal, 10-9 with 3:35 remaining.
Draw controls were the key for the Owls in the final minutes, as Schweitzer took off down the field and scored after Parcell had earned the draw control following La Salle’s final goal. She did it again after a draw by Markunas with 2:46 left, and then completed the hat trick by scoring Temple’s final goal of the game with 18 seconds on the clock.
Tess Bishop made an impressive 11 saves to help Temple get the win, tying her second-most saves in a game so far this season. Markunas finished the contest with a game-high six draw controls to go with her game-high three assists.
