Once again, the Griffins welcome a class of talented individuals that spans the country and, this year, reaches into Canada as well. Coach Dougherty added, “This group has been a lot of fun to recruit because in addition to their tremendous talent, every guy is going to bring something unique to our team chemistry and personality.”
Zach Groves – (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) – Midfield/LSM
Groves is three year varsity letterman for Bishop Shanahan High School. He moved from midfield to longpole defense during his sophomore season to support his team, which has improved their record in each of his three seasons. Groves also played club lacrosse for the Black Bear Lacrosse Club.
Scott Parke – (Springfield, PA/Springfield Delco/Delaware County CC) – Defense
Parke was a two-year varsity starter for Springfield-Delco High School and earned an All-Central League Honorable Mention as a senior. He transfers to Chestnut Hill College after spending sophomore year away from lacrosse while studying at Delaware County Community College (DCCC). He started every game as a freshman at Neumann University and led the team in caused turnovers. Parke was named to the Dean’s List at both Neumann University and DCCC.
Derick Darnulc – (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) – Defense
Darnulc is a two-sport captain at Baldwin High School, competing in lacrosse and football. As a four-year defensive starter, Darnulc was named to the All-Nassau County Men’s Lacrosse Team after his junior (2011) and senior (2012) seasons. He earned All-Nassau County Honorable Mention last season as a defenseman for the Bruins. Darnulc was also the 2011 captain and an all-conference player on the Bruins football team. When with the Griffins, Darnulc will rejoin his former high school teammate, current Chestnut Hill College sophomore midfielder, Chris Mertens (Freeport, NY).
Tanner Fisher – (Port Coquitlam, BC/Blue Ridge) – Midfield
Fisher comes to Chestnut Hill College after a senior season in which he led the state of Virginia in scoring (86 goals and 28 assists, 114 points) and helped guide Blue Ridge High School to state runner–up in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) playoffs. Fisher was named All-Virginia Independent Conference (VIC) Player of the Year and a US Lacrosse High School All-American in 2012 after earning VIC First Team status in 2011 and 2012.
Danny Fleagle – (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air) – Defense
Fleagle started on defense each of the past two seasons for Bel Air High School while garnering All-Harford County accolades in both 2011 and 2012. He earned the distinction of Most Improved Player (MIP) after his junior season (2011), and in his senior campaign (2012), Fleagle captained the team while earning the title of Defensive Most Valuable Player (MVP). Fleagle also received Bel Air’s “Minds in Motion” award in recognition of maintaining a GPA greater than 3.25 during lacrosse season. In the summers, Danny played with the Harford Mavericks lacrosse club.
George Markey – (Neshanic Station, NJ/Immaculata) – Attack
Markey captained Immaculata High School this season, while leading the Spartans in points his sophomore (59 goals and 11 assists, 70 points) and senior years, while finishing second on the team in his junior campaign (57 goals and 27 assists, 84 points). He was named to the Star Ledger All-State Sophomore and Junior teams after the 2010 and 2011 seasons, respectively, while also garnering All-Somerset County honors in both years. Markey also represented his home state of New Jersey last summer at the Under Armour Underclassmen Games and Adidas National Classic. He also played his summer ball with Team Turnpike.
Austin Mercado – (Temecula, CA/Great Oak) – Midfield
Mercado was twice named captain at Great Oak High School while setting school records for groundballs in a season in 2011 (98) and face-off win percentage in 2012 (.763). Mercado was named his team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) as a junior and Best Team Player in both 2011 and 2012. He also played for the Lax West Elite Gunners Lacrosse Club out of San Diego under the tutelage of Michael Watson, a former teammate of Coach Dougherty’s on the 1998 United States National team.
Michael Plaia – (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan) – Attack
Plaia is a three-year varsity attack with big game experience. His 30 points in his junior campaign helped push Holy Trinity Diocesan High School to a New York State CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association) Championship in 2011. In his senior season, he led his team in goals (45) and points (55).
Nick Thomas – (South Ogden, UT/Bonneville) – Midfield
Thomas was a two-time captain for Bonneville High School and was twice named All-North Division I First Team performer. In his last two seasons he compiled 95 points, 142 ground balls and won greater than 63% of his face-offs, earning him the Face-Off Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors at the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showcase in 2010. Thomas was a three-time honor roll student at Bonneville High School.
