Twentieth annual PLA Golf Outing: Winners announced, nearly $17,000 is raised to help build lacrosse programs

Nearly $17,000 was raised at the 20th Annual Philadelphia Lacrosse Association Golf Outing, held Monday at White Manor Country Club in Willistown Township.

Over 100 golfers and 55 sponsors participated and helped the PLA raise funds to further the PLA’s mission. The proceeds will enable the PLA to continue to support the Philadelphia School District’s middle grades program, which features 8 teams (4 boys/4 girls), and the 12 PIAA sanctioned high school teams (6 boys/6 girls).

Robert Coleman, Executive Director for Athletics for the Philadelphia School District, spoke at the outing banquet about the growth of the game in the Philadelphia and thanked the PLA for its support, much of which helps underwrite the School Districts efforts to keep the lacrosse program sustainable notwithstanding budget cuts.

Also speaking at the outing was Wings star Brodie Merrill, one of the most decorated lacrosse players in the history of the game. Merrill spoke about his roles as spokesperson for “Lacrosse Wake-Up Call,” a Wings initiatives designed to promote good judgments and decisions with regarding the health and well-being in response to the NCAA’s recent study of drug abuse among lacrosse players. As Merrill told the assemble guests, “Daily decisions determine destiny.”
