The 2012 Penn Select team will be participating in the US Lacrosse Regional Championship in Raleigh, NC, from Friday through Sunday. Penn Select was created to fill the void that was created when the PLA decided to discontinue the Penn Star program. The team is poised to showcase the top U-13 players in Pennsylvania on a national stage.
“We are very excited to be able to continue the proud heritage that Penn Star created in the past,” said Penn Select Coach Pat McDonough. “It is a great opportunity for these U-13 boys who will ultimately be competing with each other at the high school level or playing together in high school in some instances to compete with each other.
“Most important, however, is the opportunity for the best boy players from this region the opportunity to compete on a national stage at the U.S.L. Regional Championships.”
Penn Select is a regional team that transcends all club / league affiliations to bring the best of Pennsylvania lacrosse together on one team. The tryout process took place over 3 days and included 90 of the region’s top players.
All players had to be nominated by their township team’s coaches to participate in the tryout, thus providing the coaches the fullest range of good players to evaluate. The 24-man roster was selected by a panel of unaffiliated evaluators as coaches of club teams were not allowed to take part in the evaluation process.
“The number of Philadelphia area players who are playing at the highest levels of Division 1 and Division 3 lacrosse has exploded over the past ten years,” said Coach Billy McKinney. “While this team is of course not intended to serve as a precursor to that level of play, it is safe to say that many of these fine young players will go on to successful, promising high school and collegiate careers playing the sport that they love – lacrosse.
“However, what matters most now is giving these boys the chance to compete, have fun with their peers, and witness how the best players in the country – including themselves – compete. I have dedicated myself to teaching the game of lacrosse and I have seen firsthand how athletic development is extremely peer driven.
“When solid coaches give a group of talented players the opportunity to compete against each other in a practice setting is amazes me how quickly the players pick up advanced skills. This group has practiced together for 16 hours over the past month and I am extremely proud of how much each player improved.”
The U-13 players selected are an eclectic group representing: 6 counties (Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, Lehigh, Chester, & New Castle), 26 township and club teams (380 Lacrosse, Abington LC, Baggataway, Bandits, Big 4 LC, Black Bear, Brandywine, Braveheart, CBAA, Collegeville Cougars, Crooked Crosse, Duke’s Triple H, Finn’s Finest, Freedom Lacrosse, Horsham LC, Jags Lax, Lionville, Lower Macungie, North Penn, Philly Fever, Radnor, Select Lacrosse, Uprising LC, West Chester, Wilmington Wings, &, Wisslax), and 18 schools (Abington Jr HS, Ancillae-Assumpta Academy, Arcola MS, Cold Spring Elementary, Fugett, Garnet Valley MS, Gwynedd Mercy Academy, Holicong MS, Lionville MS, Lower Macungie MS, Norwood Academy, Penn Charter, Perk Valley West MS, Radnor MS, Sandy Run MS, Spring-Ford, St. Hilary, & Wilmington Friends).
“We are very excited as coaches to be coaching boys from such a wide range of area programs,” said Coach Hank Resch. “The Penn Select team is represented by players from the top Club and local programs throughout the region, including players from Montgomery County, Lehigh County, the Main Line, Delaware County and Chester County. It is a great group of U-13 boys who truly represent the best of the best in this area.”
The 2012 Penn Select team is proud to be sponsored by Warrior/Brine and will be wearing custom helmets, gloves, and uniforms at the US Lacrosse Regional Championship. Penn Select is coached by Billy McKinney, Patrick McDonough, and Hank Resch. For more information on Penn Select, the website is www.pennselect.com.
