Matt Rambo notched three goals and two assists while Sean Coleman added two goals and two assists as La Salle bolted to a 7-1 first-period and toppled Downingtown West, 12-5, in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs at Harriton.

La Salle outshot the Whippets 29-19 and led 7-1 at halftime.

La Salle (19-4) will face District 7 third-place finisher Mt. Lebanon in the PIAA semifinals at a neutral site on Tuesday.

“They were showing a lot of tension to me and Coleman,” said Rambo “We were just very prepared. Our defense played very hard and we knew what to do in every situation.”

Adam Stefanowicz, Stephen Hudak and Jeff Cimbalista each scored two goals for the Explorers. The La Salle defense also came up big, continually frustrating the potent Whippets’ offense. Corey Shaffer was called on to make three saves on the day.

“The whole team came up big today,” said coach Bill Leahy. “We were very surgical in our approach and just have to keep moving forward.”

Matt Logan scored twice and Jim Sharer, Dylan Ikkala, and Tyler McWilliams all scored a goal for the Whippets (22-2), who look back on a standout season that saw them win the Ches-Mont League with an undefeated record while placing third in District 1.

“I’m proud of the guys,” said West coach Tommy Hannum. “Hats off to them for all of their dedication and hard work. A lot of the seniors are playing in college so they have a lot of lacrosse ahead of them.”
