It’s championship week for The University of Scranton men’s and women’s lacrosse teams as both programs begin their quests for a Landmark Conference title with semifinal games today.
For the men’s team, it’s time to defend the title it won last season with a 12-8 victory over Goucher College in the championship game. The Royals earned the third seed in the playoffs with a 13-7 victory over Catholic University on Saturday. They entered that game needing to win by four or more to guarantee a playoff spot.
Scranton (9-6, 3-3 Landmark Conference) will face Drew University (12-3, 5-1 Landmark) in a semifinal match on tonight at 7 p.m. in Madison, N.J. The Rangers earned a 10-8 victory over the Royals in the regular-season matchup on March 31 at Fitzpatrick Field. Scranton led at halftime, 7-5, but managed just one second-half goal in the defeat. Junior attacker Taylor Nelson (Downingtown East) is third on the team with 35 points (25 goals, 10 assists) and senior attacker Daniel Slade (Central Bucks East) is fourth with 30 points (19 goals, 11 assists).
Also, key players include Mike Rufo (Haverford School) with 20 goals, John Gregitis (St. Joseph’s Prep) with 16 points, Colin McPyle (Central Bucks South) with 28 groundballs, Matt Glenn (Central Bucks East) with four goals and Matt Finor (Council Rock South), with 143 face-off wins (52 percent) and 74 groundballs, The defense features Ryan Saraceni (La Salle), Pat Farrell (St. Joseph’s Prep), John McShea (St. Joseph’s Prep) and goalie Ben Worthington (Archbishop Wood), who is 8-6 with an 8.47 goals against average.

The winner of Wednesday’s semifinal will face the winner of the Catholic vs. Goucher semifinal in the Landmark Championship on Saturday, May 5, at a time to be determined at the site of the highest remaining seed.
For The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team, it’ll be a familiar opponent on the other bench in Wednesday’s semifinal. The fourth-seeded Royals (11-6, 1-3 Landmark) will take on top-seeded Catholic University (12-5, 4-0 Landmark) today at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The Royals lost to the Cardinals, 18-5, on Saturday in the regular season finale.
Junior attacker Deanna Giorno (Central Bucks South) is one of the top scorers for Scranton with 47 points (25 goals, 22 assists). Junior goalie Kathleen Smart (Archbishop-Wood) is 10-6 between the pipes with a save percentage of .446 in 795 minutes.
Catholic is currently ranked 15th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll. The Cardinals have won five straight and 10 out of their last 11.
