Brandon Miller made 47 saves while Kevin Crowley (four goals, one assist), Brodie Merrill (three goals, two assists) and Dan Dawson (nine assists, one goal) led the offense as the Philadlephia Wings claimed a hard-fought 14-13 win over the Buffalo Bandits today at the Wells Fargo Center in National Lacrosse League action.
The win lifted the Wings to 3-2 in the eastern Division while Buffalo (2-4) suffered its fourth straight loss.
Drew Westervelt broke a tie with 3:40 to play and added an insurance goal as the Wings defeated the Bandits for the second time this year.
Westervelt took a pass from midfield and drove in and stuffed a shot past Buffalo goaltender Angus Goodleaf to snap a 12-12 tie. The goal stood after a Bandits challenge, and Westervelt finished off his hat trick with two minutes remaining.
Dawson is now among the NLL leaders with 27 assists this season. Crowley, the top overall pick in the 2011 NLL Draft, had been held to one goal in each of his previous two games for Philadelphia.
John Tavares scored on a late penalty shot to draw the Bandits within 14-13, but the Wings won a crucial face-off and Miller made a key save late in the game to seal it. Mat Giles finished with three goals and two assists for Buffalo.
The Wings wore jerseys with their twitter handles – the first time any pro team has ever done so. the customized jerseys were auctioned off post-game with proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The Wings will travel to Toronto to play the Rock next Saturday and will next return to Wells Fargo Center for a March 3 home game versus the Rochester Knighthawks.
