From Press Release
Malvern Prep captured its third Peter K. Ortale Memorial Trophy by winning the 2012 Basic Training Lacrosse Fall League championship with an 8-7 overtime thriller over Avon Grove.
Goalie Carson Cocco was outstanding in goal all day for Malvern and made two point blank saves in the final frame. The second stop started a text book transition goal and culminated when Joe Dunn buried the game-winner, his third of the day, off a beautiful assist from Tommy O’Conner.
Avon Grove surged out to an early lead behind strong face-off work by Anthony Cardile and solid goaltending by Will Schreiner. Malvern’s offense kept the pressure on with scoring by Drew Schantz (2G), Tommy O’Connor (1G/2A), Joe Dunn (3G/1A), Ryan Hilburn (1A) and Mick Horrocks (1G) and balanced it with great defense by Chad Rafferty, Greg Pelton, Jared Horoski and Chris Isenberg.
Avon Grove, however, stormed back with two late goals. One came off a sensational off side rip on a north-south drive by midfielder Tanner Peck. The tying goal was scored by Matt King with :19 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.
The game capped another great fall season of lacrosse hosted at Eastern University’s sports complex. League directors lauded the players for the spirited competition and thanked coaches as well as the strong fan support from parents and friends.
2012 Peter K. Ortale Trophy
Awarded to BTL Fall League champion. Pete was tragically taken on September 11th, 2001. A warrior poet in the truest sense. He was a two-time High School All American midfielder who captained Penn Charter’s 1983 state championship team. He also was the captain of Duke University’s lacrosse team when you could count on one hand the number of lacrosse players from PA playing Division 1 lacrosse. He was the ultimate team player before there were travel teams and Inside Lacrosse recruit ranking lists. He embodied what this league’s mission seeks to reinforce; commitment to your high school team and teammates.
