Mother Nature proved a fan of lacrosse providing a perfect day of sunshine for the 20th annual Abington Play Day held at Abington High School on May 12.
Over 80 teams representing three age groups and 19 clubs met for a day of both friendly play or competition. In the 7th / 8th Grade tournament three of the final four fought their way from the pigtail brackets. The semifinals consisted of teams from Abington, Chestnut Hill, the Lady Bulldogs and the Colts from Pittsburgh.
At the end of the day Chestnut Hill edged the Colts for the championship. This year was our second year for the 5th / 6th grade tournament. Abington and the Lady Bulldogs appeared in the final with Abington taking the day. They were joined in the final four by Central Bucks and Souderton.
This year’s “Love of the Game” medal was awarded to J’Simone Lloyd a player on the 3rd / 4th Grade squads from the Wissahickon club. Commonly referred to as the “LAX Head” award the medal’s inscription reads “Beyond all Else for the Love of the Game” and is awarded to a player, coach, referee, or event staff that demonstrates a desire and dedication to playing the game of lacrosse.
This year’s Abington Play Day joined the ranks of various college programs by promoting the Friends of Jaclyn program with a fund raiser and raffling gifts such as FOJ T-shirts and gift certificates from Dicks Sporting Goods. “FOJ” matches brain tumor pediatric patients with college teams in order to share the experience of being part of a collegiate team.
