Catie Smith will admit to “not having done too well on 8-meter shots.”
The Conestoga junior stood at the free-position line with 52 seconds left in the District 1 quarterfinal round game against top-seeded and undefeated Great Valley Saturday morning.
“At practice we’ve worked so much on moving the goalie a ton,” Smith said.
That “ton” turned into “a couple of fakes” then a perfectly place tossed that ended up in the back of the cage and gave the Pioneers (14-7) a 10-9 victory over the Patriots (20-1).
Eighth-seeded Conestoga qualified for the state tournament with the win and will meet Harriton, a 10-9 winner over Springfield-Delco Saturday, in the semifinal round at West Chester Henderson Tuesday at 5 p.m.
“Do you believe we just won that game?” a jubilant ‘Stoga head coach Amy Orcutt said. “It’s my first time taking a team to states!
“We knew at halftime that draw controls would be huge, and that every time we possessed the ball Great Valley (20-1) wouldn’t have it. They have so many weapons and can be so deadly.”
Junior Meghan McGillis, who had six goals and a pair of assists, was a big weapon for the Pioneers.
“She’s stepped up so much lately,” Orcutt said. “She’s seeing the whole field, hitting open teammates and taking the ball to the cage.”
McGillis scored Conestoga’s first three goals of the second half to wipe out a two-goal halftime deficit. Brittany Edwards put Great Valley ahead with 9:45 to play, but the Patriots did not score again. McGillis connected from 8 meters with 5:08 left, then goalies Sarah Priem of Conestoga (13 saves) and Jenna Morris of Great Valley (12 saves) made key stops until Smith brought the Pioneers fans to their feet with her big goal.
“I can’t stop smiling,” Smith said. “I see all my friends over there so excited. It’s just great.”
Ali Karwoski was the leading scorer for Great Valley with three goals, which can qualify for the state tournament with a play-back round win at home against Springfield-Delco Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
