Drew Sweetland made an amazing 22 saves and Calvin Hopkins scored the game-winner with 3:37 to play today as host Pennsbury defeated Abington, 8-7, to complete a stunning sweep of the Ghosts and clinch at least a tie for the Suburban One National Conference boys’ lacrosse championship.
The Falcons (13-1) improved to 8-0 in the Conference and can clinch the title outright by defeating host Council Rock North on Friday. Abington, the five-time defending champion, falls to 10-4 and 6-2.
The Ghosts had a 52-game winning streak against National Conference foes until losing to Pennsbury, 11-9, last month. Abington has won all five championships since the National Conference was formed.
:It has been a goal for our seniors to beat Abington since freshman year so to do it twice in one year is a great feeling,” said Hopkins. “But we still have a lot of lacrosse to play and more goals ahead of us.
“I got top side and shot low,” he added about the game-winner. “That was really all there was to it.”
Things started out well for the Ghosts today as they seized a 5-3 first-period lead. But the Falcons came back to tie it, 6-6, by halftime. In the third quarter each team traded goals, going into the fourth quarter all tied up, 7-7.
Luke Matthews had three goals and Andrew Probst added a pair while Hopkins added two assists.
Matt Figueroa and Max Molloy each had two goals for the Ghosts.
