Mark Leonhard had four goals and an assist and Brendan Newman contributed three goals and four assists to lead visiting Lawrenceville School to a thrilling 10-9 win over Hill School Friday in a first-place showdown in Mid-Atlantic Prep League boys’ lacrosse. The game was the 50th for these traditional rivals.

The Big Red (12-3) takes over first place at 3-0 in the league with two games to play. Hill School (7-4) is 3-1.

Hill trailed, 10-6, with seven minutes to play and then staged a furious comeback, pulling within 19-9 with 17 seconds to play. The Blues won the ensuing face-off and Jack Wallice had a clean shot to tie with three seconds left, but the shot went wide of goalie Matt O’Connor (seven saves).

Wallice, Eric Foote, Andrew Marone and Eric Neumeyer each scored twice for the Blues.

“It’s the 50th year of Hill boys’ lacrosse against our school’s biggest and oldest rival – anybody from either school from any decade would have appreciated the competition, sportsmanship and respect these two programs have for each other,” said Hill coach Ned Ide. “But that doesn’t make losing close ones any easier!”
