Episcopal Academy scored five unanswered goals in the first and second periods and improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the Inter-Ac League today by handily defeating host Malvern Prep, 9-4, in boys’ lacrosse.
Connor Haab had three goals and Morgan Westby added two goals and an assist while Jon Garino scored twice and won 9 of 15 face-offs as the Churchmen seized a 6-2 halftime lead and never looked back.
“It feels awesome. This is the most satisfying win of the season.” said Garino. He felt that the whole team was very confident that they could pull out a victory against their inter-ac rival. “Coach (Andy) Hayes really tried to instill a sense of confidence with all of us. The fact that he believed in us really helped us out today.”
Hayes was most proud of how hard the Churchmen played: “We play as a team. We don’t have any superstars so we have to play hard for 48 minutes. We scored some timely goals as well. Congrats to the boys.
“Malvern is well coached, they play hard and their physical. We knew we were going to have to match their intensity.”
Malvern Prep, which held a 2-1 lead midway through the first period, fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Ian Strain added a goal and an assist and Tyler Odell also scored for EA.
Conor Glancy, Greg Pelton, Graeme Weaver and Joe Dunn all scored for the Friars.
Malvern Prep head coach Dave Metzbower pinpointed the loss on the Friars’ transition game. “They played better than us. We gave up too many transition goals,” he said. “We need to work on everything. They could throw and catch out there and we couldn’t. There really isn’t one thing we did well today.”
