Tyler McWilliams and Dylan Ikkala each scored three goals Tuesday night as host Downingtown West toppled Bishop Shanahan, 11-7, to remain undefeated and take another step toward a Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse championship.
The Whippets are 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the Ches-Mont. Shanahan fell to 11-3 and 5-3.
Downingtown West adjusted its attack against the Eagles’ zone defense.
“We were really moving the ball tonight well,” said Ikkala. “We created a lot of shots for our inside guys with them playing zone. Just passing it around gave us opportunities.”
West has three games left on the schedule: Avon Grove (Thursday, Bayard Rustin and West Chester East.
“It’s all about keeping our momentum going,” stated Ikkala. “We know we have three big games left before the playoffs, so focus is going to be crucial.”
Alex Cuttic had six saves in goal and Eric Rankel won 15 of 19 face-offs.
Shanahan coach John Heisman was proud of his team’s effort, and felt the effort was a step in the right direction.
“We made a few mistakes, but we stuck to our plan the whole time,” he said. “I’m proud of the guys because they didn’t quit.”
Senior midfielder Joe McErlean scored three goals and attackman Johnny Mehok added a goal and two assists for the Eagles. Anthony Wagner made seven saves.
McErlean alluded to his team’s lack of possessions as well. “It was hard to gain momentum with their ball control, said McErlean. “They possessed the ball really well, but when we were on offense we had some good looks, too. They were just a good team.”
