Adam Goins scored three goals while Pierre Atkinson and Jake Scott each scored two as host Conestoga defeated Ridley tonight in a first-place Central League lacrosse showdown, 12-6, to clinch at least a tie for the championship.
The defending champion Pioneers are 10-0 in the league and 13-3 overall. They can clinch the title outright by downing Garnet Valley Tuesday. Ridley falls to 9-1 and 13-3.
“It was a good night, a good night for all the seniors. So I’m happy we could get a win,” said Goins. “I was just the one scoring the goals. You know, everyone’s out there playing well… [I am] excited to start the playoffs next week.”
Tyler Brooke added a goal and three assists for the Pioneers while Connor Frisina had a goal and two assists. Brody Shea made 12 saves in goal.
“It was an exciting night,” said Brooke. “I’ve been looking forward to it all year.”
Conestoga struck first when Goins scored on the Pioneers’ first shot of the game. Long pole Miles Thomas scored 10 seconds later to put his team up 2-0.
Dalton George led Ridley with two goals and Mike Crowley had a goal and three assists.
“I was hoping we’d have it close in the fourth quarter and be able to make a little bit of a run possibly, said Ridley head coach Kevin Ellers. “They’re solid. Our kids played very hard…
“I think we came out a little slow and then we said, ‘The heck with it, let’s just go after them and see what we can do.’ They’re good, enough said. They’re very good and I thought we battled, and at some point I’d like to play them again.”
Ridley will return home on Saturday to face Great Valley.
“One game doesn’t make a season,” added Ellers. “And hopefully we can continue on and make a run in the playoffs of some sort.”
Conestoga hosts La Salle Saturday in a game that matches two teams that faced off in the state finals in 2009 and 2010.
