Arcadia University men’s lacrosse team will kick off its inaugural NCAA season when the team competes in their first fall tournament as a varsity program on October 6th and 7th at the 6th annual Nick Colleluori Classic at Ridley High.

The tournament – hosted by the HEADstrong Foundation – has become one of the most visible fall lacrosse tournaments in the country and is a two-day event dedicated to remembering the life and legacy of Nicholas Colleluori while promoting the importance of community, brotherhood and sportsmanship within the game.

As a men’s lacrosse student-athlete at Hofstra University, Colleluori lost a 14 month battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2006. During his fight, he documented his experience and began putting in place the framework for the organization now recognized as HEADstrong and led by his mother and Foundation president Cheryl Colleluori.

Through the help of Hofstra’s Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney, Colleluori’s family began to create a special fundraising event with the purpose of memorializing their son Nicolas while generating funds to support the fight against blood cancer in his name. The Nicholas Colleluori Classic has become a tradition in the sport of lacrosse. Now in its 6th year, this milestone event, hosted by and benefiting the HEADstrong Foundation has seen over $1,000,000 generated in their fight against blood cancer.

In addition to returning players from last season’s club team, Arcadia Head Coach Drew Delaney has recruited 25 new players to Glenside for the team’s inaugural NCAA season. He notes that participating in The Nick Colleluori Classic will be an amazing experience for the Knight’s new program.

“First and foremost, our players will be able to help a charity that has built itself with the support of the lacrosse community,” said Delaney. “It’s vital for our athletes to realize how fortunate they are and to give back to those in need whenever possible.”

The Foundation, in recognizing Arcadia’s newly formed varsity team, contacted Delaney in 2011 in arranging for the Knights to be a part of tournament lineup. “The Colleluori family has done an outstanding job in making this a premier even,” Delaney said, “and as a newly formed Division III program, we are thrilled to be participating.”

The tournament not only provides the Knights with their first outside competition as a varsity program, but with a meaningful fundraising component as well. The team will be selling HEADstrong tee-shirts leading up to the event.

“This type of fundraising will not only bring a monetary benefit to the fight against blood cancer,” said Delaney, “but also provides the Foundation and its efforts greater visibility.”

The Knights are aiming to raise $3,000 for the Foundation. The team will be selling T-shirts for $15 in all sizes (based upon availability). In addition to the sale of T-shirts, monetary donations- with 100% going to the Foundation- will be accepted. Checks can be made payable to Arcadia University Men’s Lacrosse and mailed to Arcadia University c/o Drew Delaney, Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach, Kuch Center, 450 South Easton Road, Glenside, PA, 19038.

John Phillips ’13, a senior men’s lacrosse player is thrilled for the opportunity to participate in what past participants have described as an emotional experience to be a part of. Phillips says he has known about the Headstrong Foundation for years, owned a few T-shirts and even had friends play for their summer lacrosse club.

“I have always appreciated the determination that goes into fundraising for such a cause,” Phillips said. “I can’t think of a better foundation to give back to, and no better way to kick-start what should be an exciting first year for our program.”

Descending upon Ridley High School – Colleluori’s home field during his high school playing days – will be 24 Division I, II and III programs throughout the country. Division I teams include: Colgate University, High Point University, Hofstra University, Lehigh University, Marist College, Marquette University, University of Michigan, Mount St. Mary’s University, Robert Morris University, St. Joseph’s University and Villanova. In addition to Arcadia, this year’s Division II & III teams include: Adelphia University, Albright College, Chestnut Hill College, Dowling College, Marymount University, Misericordia University, Neumann University, Randolph-Macon College, Rosemont College, Richard Stockton College, Thiel College and Widener University.

Each team will be led by an honorary captain who is either a survivor or patient of blood cancer. In addition the Colleluori family delivers a heartfelt address to all of the participants and attendees during the HEADstrong ceremony. Each collegiate program is recognized for their commitment to the Foundation and sincere appreciation for making the event a success.

The event schedule, including each team’s honorary captain, is currently being finalized and the HEADstrong Foundation hopes to have all details available by the end of August.
